First rule of being a geek, don't f****** admit it.

At least all I'm doing is re-installing Windows 98.

How could I be so stupid?

Admitting it to whom? I've told many women, they all loved it. I guess the fact that I can service their machine on such a basic level as to allow them to keep downloading illegal music is a real turn-on.

To make a long story short...

I have an awesome job right now, I sit in a post office all day & babysit a machine. I do maybe 20 minutes of real work in a typical day, the rest of the time I sit here & read, surf, whatever. I'm not a USPS employee so I don't have to do anything other than monitor this machine. One of the postal maintenance guys picked up on me being a geek & asked me a question about XP user accounts. One thing led to another & now I have an old Dimension on my desk and a 98SE CD.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

OH, I see now.

YOU let it slip that you're a "techie computer guy" and now you've got his POS machine in front of you...and by lunch, you'll have his Grandma's PII 100MHz, some dude's Packard Bell 486, etc.

Good luck, Mr. Guru. ;)

I have a machine that needs a rebuild, can I drop it off? I'm in no hurry. It might have some hardware problems, or not, I don't remember. But that won't matter, right?

And it begins...

By lunch, ViperGTS will have people lined up outside the post office, carrying all manner of sad, busted, old, decrepit, virus-infested, dead CPU fan clogged heatsink, no USB ports, monitor plugged into USB port, etc crappy boxes.

Hooray! Did you hear the post office fixes computers now! Word up; I'm getting my Lindows PC and taking it down there...I hear the dude don't charge nuthin'!

That would actually be more funny if it wasn't ALWAYS true.
I hate running spyware checks for the same reason. At least a virus can be removed or deleted fairly easily. Spyware buries itself in a lot of locations, and not all can be removed properly with the available programs.

ugh this is so true - I have this neighbor from back in CA - she emails me twice a day with ridiculous outlook express questions. Well, at least I can charge her a couple hundred dollars every time I come home to fix her most recent mistakes.

Hey, you should be grateful that the system isn't so clogged with viruses that it ends up crashing due to limited resources 1/2 way through a scan :p

Just say this:
"I need you to look at my computer."
"Dude, get a Dell."
"But I already have computer!"
"Dude, get a Dell."
"Fix it please."
"$50 to look at it, non refundable. Another $150 to actually fix anything."
"So... you're saying I should get a Dell?"
