Oh boy, a bunch of people are gonna be reamed heavily up the tuckus because they got too smart for themselves. One of our distributors wanted to conduct a training session with three sales offices. Apparently a bunch of salespeople planned it so that sites would be connected via the internet with over 100 Powerpoint slides w/ audio and video streamed through a web browser. At the same time there would be a 4 way conference call with Q&A.

WTF WERE THEY THINKING!!!!! My couterparts at the other sites also crapped their pants when they heard his. I only learn about this because a net admin at another site overheard a conversation. It seems we were going to be informed about the whole charade 2 hours before the thing was suppose to happen. I thing a collective, "YEA RIGHT!!!!" was shouted at once. Why do people (especially non-tech inclined people) insist on pulling off sh!t like this without first running the idea by the people that have to handle the logistics???

We explined that the distributors does not have the bandwidth to get out 3 simultanious streams. If they could pull it off, we wouldn't be able to take 3 simultanious streams because all data traffic goes through corporate HQ and trickled down to each site. Most of the time the data lines are so satrurated that even a tiny Real Video stream gets choppy. After that we have to deal with the high ping times associated with the VPN (Our telco providor sucks donkey testicles). The audio portion will be handled over a conventional speaker phone. Now how many people have used speaker phone with a half duplex microphone (one person can speak)??? Even a voice conference microphone can handle about 8 people tops on a good day. Now how the hell do they expect to hold a Q&A session with 4 sites and 400 people??? It will be chaos if we're lucky.

So all the techs are insisting that this isn't going to happen but do these idiots scale back their plans? Hell no. They claim that they'd bein big trouble if the VPs found out their plan wasn't well thought out. Guess what stupid, they VPs will be will be a hellava lot more pissed when they find out 400 people will basically attend a useless meeting.

Oh boy its gonna be a rough day. I think us techs are gonna start a pool to see how many minutes it will take before it all falls apart. I'm betting 10 minutes. I really don't care what happens. If they want to dig their own graves, so be it. I've lodged my protest in writing and my colluegues have done the same.

Denali: Its a pretty big office. Unfortunatly I only deal with people with probelems. For every idiot, there is probably 15 people that do the right thing. There are many people in the office I hardly know because they never cause any trouble and much to my chagrin, they are much nicer than the self-centered idiots. My rants don't do justice to those that work hard to make up for where the people I rant about fall short. I'm sure the majority of the people jonnyGURU deals with are nice and friendy.

While I don't really experience the lusers that Windogg does, that kind of "sure it will work" stuff happens a lot. Fortunately my boss, the director of MIS is brutal on such situations. As soon as he hears, it is finished, no question.

Amazing how marketing makes users think everyone has OC-3 fiber to the desktop!

Hang in there, Windogg, it's Friday.

I agree with soybomb, it's already falling apart. Sounds like something that would get pulled here.

Good luck Windogg.

Some of you clearly don't understand corporate thinking...;)

It will last 2 hours. The tech guys who have been around the longest will find a legitimate reason not to be around. The new techs, ass kissing techs, and techs who got caught at the water fountain at the wrong time will all be in attendance.

Thirty seconds into the program, it will become obvious to any idiot there that the plan is shot. Of course, this won't dissuade the sales execs, who immediately start to question the competence of the technical staff ("I mean, what the hell do we spend all this money on if they can't make it work?"). After 20 minutes of ordering techs around and offering pointless solutions, the top exec will finally realize the disaster. He will start taking advice from the tech staff that is in attendance, until finally finding something workable (like downloading the Powerpoint presentation to a local drive and showing it, and scrapping the video conferencing.)

Later, the meeting will be described as "inspiring, informative, and cutting edge". The sales staff will report to the corporate office that now 94.6% of the office is now fully trained, and sales production has increased 13.8% last week alone. The company will contact the Distributor to fully implement the new sales strategy.

To fund this new strategy, 45% of the technical support staff will be let go. The remaining tech support staff will now be available 24 hrs through videoconferencing...

Rio: I think you hit the nail on the head.

This was all suppose to go down on Monday. I emailed a few VPs and I've started fielding questions. The other admins and I are coordinating our efforts to put an end to this nonsense ASAP.

If it does happen, "Uhhh... I'm at the uhhhh... hospital..... I mmmmm.... fractured my uterus.... yea... I won't been until after the chao.... er ah I mean meeting ends."

Thanks for the support guys!!! :)

WOOHOO!!!! A VP known for common sense has called off the entire episode. Appraently the ringleaders had told the VPs that they, "had the full support of IT at all sites." Don't they realize that being stupid will only turn IT people against them???

I can't even begin to count how many times those very words have come out of my mouth.

I mean, okay these people aren't tech savvy so they'll make mistakes and assumptions and be wrong. But COME ON! Don't any of them have COMMON SENSE? Burning your IT person is like kicking a mechanic in the nuts and then asking him to change your oil!

Like there's this one guy who thinks himself a funny man. So he decides to make a little fun of me in front of a few people. Well guess what Mr. Funny man, those phone lines you so desperately needed the other day might take a few weeks longer than expected to be installed.

Morons.
