... and AMEX charged me a foreign conversion fee when I ordered online. I guess their prices were shown as Canadian Dollars instead of US dollars.

Prices were in USD for me, but they are located in Canada, so you get hit with the foreign transaction fee. I got hit with a ~$2 transaction fee last fall buying a book. Unfortunately, it isn't widely circulated, so you find out after the fact.

I didn't get hit with a foreign conversion fee, just a foreign transaction fee. The former is for transaction in another currency.

No. Abebooks is not the one charging the fee. The conversion fees (if not in USD) and foreign transaction fees come from the credit card company.

I bought from them once before and do not recall getting hit with that fee.
