Damaging drive when overburning CDR?

Lucky

Lifer
I burnt approx. 800 megs onto an 80min. CDR a few minutes ago and now my lite on 40x is refusing to respond to eject requests through windows. This presents a problem as I have my drive stealthed with no external eject button.

I've read up that overburning can possibly damage your physical drive. Can anyone explain to me how that is possible and if perhaps that's whats happens to me?

did you restart your computer? something like this happened to my lite-on a little while ago, and simply restarting the computer fixed it. go figure.

no but I'll try that. I'm also interested, in general, in how it would be physically possibly. I've read all over and there are warning abound about how it can damage your drive but there are no explanations.

the damage can be done when you overburning a cd...the laser has to go so far out that it can penatrate to other components in the drive...but that happens only when laser is beyond the cd layer
