damaged xfx 6800gs question

hello one of the capacitor on my 6800gs falled of like 1 year ago. however it has been working like a normal since then, until i wanted to dual monitors recently. one of the monitors just stays black like no signal when i tried. my guess is the capacitor. thank you

amd 939 3700+
asrock 939 dual sata2
2 gbs ram
450w psu

Whats your question? Is it that a lost capacitor may lead to flawed operation? Yes it can, check your warranty and see if its still covered.

If you need to ask where to buy a capacitor from, you're probably not going to have much luck soldering it on yourself...

the one that fell off has both of its legs cut off.

Either way, there should be some kind of metal studs left where the leads (legs) came out of, unless there were actually cut right up to the body of the capacitor. You may be able to (CAREFULLY) solder some solid wires onto the remains of the leads, and then solder the cap onto the board.

If not, you'll need a new capacitor. It should have a rating on it in Farads (it will look something like "20uF", meaning 20 micro Farads), and hopefully a voltage rating. You will need another capacitor that meets these exact ratings.

Well, it's physical damage so you can forget about any company offering any sort of warranty for it. If you can't fix it have someone fix it for you just deal with 1 monitor.

actually they offered to replace. it's just that i threw away the original heatsink and fan. so i cant send it back
i figure a capacitor gotta be cheaper than the fan.

Unless you have an electrical diagram of the original card, or can find a photo of the card including a close up of the missing capacitor, finding the right replacement will be next to impossible. You might ask XFX support if they can provide this information since there's no way they would/should warranty a card you broke parts off of.

i would just find a stock heatsink from another one. at least if they fix it and mess it up you can still get it replaced under the warranty, but the second you go to solder it your warranty goes out the window. so if you mess it up or it turns out that that wasn't what was causing the monitor problem, then you'd have to buy a new card.

oh no i didnt break the card. it was broken since day one or during shipping. and they have the life time warranty thingy.
regarding the capacitor, there are, i think 5 capacitors of the same kind on the board. one set free, the other four are working as they should. AHH i wanna get a 8800 anyway, but i want to wait for the upcoming intel pricecut before i make my decision. not that i need to fix my 6800 i just want to fix it. thanks.
