Damaged Fonts in IE 5.5 WIN98

For some reason, whenever i read articles in english, certain letters like the letter "t" and punctuation marks like the apostrophe appear as foreign characters (sometimes boxes, or chinese or japanese characters). Does anyone know how to fix this? Thanks
This is in WIN98 (first edition) internet explorer 5.5

Are you using the standard fonts for IE? 'Verdana' for Web page font and 'Courier New' for plain text? The fonts diaglog box is under Internet Options / General / Fonts.
