Damaged CPU...

This is one of those "I have a friend" things... he bought an AMD Duron at an auction site... has some chips on the corners. Sounds like HSF mounting damage, he says it's not bad but I haven't seen it so who knows. Then he says he can't get the 'blue' thermal paste off as it's a used processor... I say what?
So, I'm sure some of us have chipped the corners while mounting HSF's... at what point does it have an effect on the processor???
And has anyone heard of 'blue' thermal compound???? He's tried nail polish remover and all the rest and says he can't get it all off..... any ideas what that might be???
Sorry for the poor info... so let's hear some theories.... ;-) thx

I wouldn't worry about it, as long as the CPU runs, it's fine, just make the best reasonable contact with the HSF without breaking the chip.

Try goo gone or straight acetone but let it soak a little. Make sure to apply new heatsink compound, preferably artic silver, and if it works consider yourself lucky

That's just it, he hasn't installed it yet... so don't know if it's working.
As amdskip mentioned... I told him to give it a shot and hope for the best... if he can take the $$$ hit. Didn't pay much for it and difficult to return auction items.
The concern I had was this blue stuff on the top of the cpu he mentioned.... just don't seem right to me! Sounds like a heavily abused CPU.

I wonder if it is the color "blue" present on all durons. I know that my first Tbird was a greenish color.

Anyhow I am thinking the blue might be the color of the core on the durons.

Amd processors are not blue at all.

Actually I've heard, and read a bit about blue AMD's.... saw some pics too... they're actually purpleish, kind of a tint. Highly prized for their overclocking abilities.
Still haven't heard back so don't know if he gave it a shot or sent it back.... but agree ibmcleod, not a good way to buy the heart of your system!

I have one of those blueish purpleish core AMD athlons. Its a 1ghz AXIA, soon to be a 1.4 or 1.5ghz AXIA.

Yeah, there are some "blue-ish" AMD cores. My sister's 1.3GHz Duron has a blue-purple tint to it. It looks like a coating on the core, but it doesn't seem to come off. If he cleans it with "Goo-Gone" or acetone and a lint-free cloth. he should be OK. I also have seen running an Athlon T-bird with a corner chipped completely off (opposite the "notched" corner) with out any problems. If it works, he's lucky. I hope he didn't pay much as you can get Duron 1.3's for as little as $31.00!

He's over in the UK so don't know about what is available there... think he only paid around $30 US so not a great loss if that's how it turns out.... I'll let you know what happened it I ever hear from him....!

Duron 1.3's can be had for around £40 over here in average retail channels so $30 (£20 ish) is not too bad.
