damaged board from using underpowered PS?

I sold a friend of mine my old MSI K7N420 motherboard with a XP 2100 processor which I was using with an Enermax 431w power supply. He took it home at tried to run it on some generic PS which only is rated 140w on the +5 and +3.3. The system ran for a while and installed XP but shortly afterward crashed and now won't boot. He's cleared the cmos and unplugged everything, but still won't boot.

Has anyone ever fried their board using an underpowered PS? He could have damaged the PS to the point where it won't boot that board at all, but since I just sold him the board, I'd feel terrible if it was the board that actually fried. I did warn him about using a strong enough PS, and the board came right out of my working machine when he got it, so I know it was ok.

can you get your power supply and the parts you sold you buddy back together ? try that and see what happens . could be anything at this point. i've had a hard drive die because power supply started to not keep good voltage.
good luck

Most likely a damaged 140W PS or it has gone into output crowbar, limiting available current because the pc board is demanding too much. (But that would be a nicely designed PS, not a cheap PS).

We're going to have to try it out on my PS, which is a pain but oh well. I've tried underpowered PS's before and had them not boot the machine, but never have I seen one actually fry anything.
