Tampa got extremely lucky.

Yep but just like New Orleans, Tampa will have a direct hit sooner or later from a major hurricane. The question is when?

Then it depends on which way it comes in. That can make a big difference espically with storm surge damage.

I just hope its never a Cat. 5 for either New Orleans or Tampa. Not even a Cat. 4 or anything. A Cat. 5 would be horrible with a direct hit of New Orleans or Tampa espically if it came in the worst way possible.

There could be another major hurricane soon headed toward one of the gulf states in about 1 week or less.

Stand in front of it.

Heck thats not the only thing I am going to do. I am going to be part of it. I am part of Mother Nature. Dying from mother nature in my opinion would be the greatest thing ever!

Anyone from Naples here? How hard were you hit?

Not too bad. Lots and lots of trees and power lines are down though. We just got power back an hour ago. Much of the city is still without power I think. At least half of the traffic lights are still out. The grocery store I work at lost all of there perishables. They had about a hundred carts in the back of the store filled with trash bags full of bad food. They are still without power but they are open so people can by canned food and such. They are already clearing the debris off the roads. Last night we were driving around and there were many trees blocking the roads.

I lived through Hurricane Fran when it came through Raleigh, NC on 5-6 September 1996 and we were hammered that far inland by what was at that point only a category 1 storm. I heard good news that my Grandmother, who lives in N. Fort Myers, FL had zero damage to her home, while all the homes around hers were either heavily damaged or completely destroyed down to the foundations. Thank the Lord for miracles.

Orlando, FL got hit pretty hard as well 🙁 Winds were clocked up to 105 mph up there.

Some things are damaged like a airport, lots of trees down, etc

I live in Orlando, Just got power back about an hour ago. No damage to my place but we do have tons of trees down. Lots of buildings have roof damage and near where my brother lives a couple of mobile homes had the roofs ripped off. Lots of power still out over the city and alot of traffic lights out.

Narse do you remember the last time Orlando, FL had a hurricane directly hit them? Have you heard if any of the theme parks in Orlando, FL were damaged?

News is still hard to come by, having trouble getting my dish back on right now. Kissimmee got hit pretty hard as well so I am sure there was some damage to the parks. I have not lived in Florida very long but it seems the last one to come this way was was Donna back in the 60s

Talked to my brother again that lives in Kissimmee. He said 192 was pretty bad off and most hotels and stores had damage. His neighborhood had a tree on numerous houses, but he only had mild damage to his house. He said Kiss/Orl/St. Cloud had pretty substantial damage. He was on his way back from Ft. Meyers where he was purchasing supplies...

What's more disconcerting:

HURRICANE HEADLINES: Tragic reports continue to come out of
Southwest Florida this afternoon. No one is giving any definite fatality
numbers at this time because everything is very chaotic. One Charlotte
County hospital official reported that she knew of somewhere between 150-200
fatalities that had come to their three hospitals. Florida Governor Jeb
Bush says that disaster teams are having a hard time getting into some
areas. A Charlotte County government official reports that as many as 9,000
homes and buildings have been destroyed. He said, "We have met our
Andrew."

My wife was in Naples yesterday during the hurricane with my mother-in-law and daughter. The power has been out for about 24 hours at the hotel they are staying in (Pelican Bay?). Needless to say, they did leave the area this afternoon for Palm Beach to stay with my sister-in-law before heading down to the Keys on Monday.

I can't believe the damage that I've seen on the news channels. Truly devastating. 🙁

Thanks for the info. I think half of the people I hung out with in college were from Naples. I've tried reaching them, but I don't want to tie up the phone lines (assuming they are even up).

I'm in Naples, power was out for about 36 hours at my house, and we have an ongoing 11-6 curfew, so i'm stuck at home grrr

I just had my power and cable restored to my house after 48 hours (Outstanding time!!!) but it sounds like I am one of the lucky few 🙁 Power is still out for most of LEE County , not to mention Sanibel, Captiva, FT. Myers Beach, Boca Grande is still not accessible due to downed trees, bridges, power poles & lines etc..... So they are saying the death toll will rise as they reach these areas. AND THIS IS JUST LEE COUNTY. The worst of the damage done is one county up where they expect to find alot of ppl hurt/deceased in these little communities totally destroyed and not accessible atm....

They have been talking about the Island of Upper Captiva have been split in 2 by about 400 yards....

The fourth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Danielle, formed Friday but was several days from land. The tropical storm was rapidly gaining strength, with top sustained winds of 65 mph, and could become a hurricane, forecasters said.

Newly formed Tropical Storm Earl was threatening islands in the southeastern Caribbean Sea.

Anyone know what's happening right now with those two storms?

Sounds like Danielle might be heading away from land, but too soon to tell with Earl.
Most poignant quote from your link:

The dozens of stuffed animals he'd won for his wife in claw machines were strewn across the puddled lawn and the street. But inside the trailer, her bell collection was intact. "Eerie," he said.
