Three men decided to split the cost of a hotel room. The hotel manager gave them a price of $30.

The men split the bill evenly, each paying $10, and went to their room. However, the hotel manager realized that it was a Wednesday night, which meant the hotel had a special: rooms were only $25. He had overcharged them $5!

He called the bellboy, gave him five one-dollar bills and told him to return it to the men.

When the bellboy explained the situation to the men, they were so pleased at the honesty of the establishment that they promptly tipped the bellboy $2 of the $5 he had returned and each kept $1 for himself.

So each of the three men ended up paying $9 (their original $10, minus $1 back) totalling $27, plus $2 for the bellboy makes $29.

so where did the other dollar go?

Look at the numbers again.

$30 - $5 + $2 = $27

$30 originally, $5 back, $2 to the bellboy = $27 total spent

3 x $9 = $27

Flawed logic, they paid 30, then it was 25

25+3 from money they got back = 28, then 2 for the bellboy=30

BTW, 1994 called, they want their sh!tty brain game back 😛

Amount paid by each man = $8.33 x (3 men) = $25.00
Amount given to the bell boy = $2.00
Amount kept by each man = $1.00 x (3 men) = $3.00

$25 + $2 + $3 = $30.00

Lol... my dad told me that one when I was 7 years old. Puzzled over it for a year before I figured it out.

This is not complicated, people. Aceshigh has it right. At the start, there are $30 to split among the five parties (3 men, one bb, one manager). The three men start with $10 each. At the end, the manager has $25, the bellboy has $2, and each of the three men has $1. 25 + 2 + 3*1 = 30.

What's the problem? The "plus two for the bellboy" in the original statement is what's wrong. The men still payed $27 in total, $25 of which went to the hotel and $2 to the bell boy. That "plus $2" is a cheap trick to confuse the weak-minded, plus it's wrong. :disgust:
