Ok anyways there was a word problem on my test, so I converted it into equation.
Find x and Y.
120x+60y= 720 (-3)
200x+80y=1080 (2)
-------------------------

so I estimated that 80x2 and 60x3 would be the same, but later I figured out where I was wrong.

it should have been x(-4) and (2) :(

That's it, i'm never estimating again, because apparently I suck at it. I'll do everything with a calculator :|
:p :p :p :confused:

Dude, I just had to look up how to do long division. I have NEVER done long division in my life.

probably would've been simpler to just divide the first equation by 60 giving you

2x + y = 12

dividing the second equation by 20 gives

10x + 4 y = 54

now you can either substitute and solve or multiply the first equation by -4 and add

so -8x - 4y = -48
10x + 4y = 54

2x = 6
x=3

: )

Ah, I see, reduce the numbers instead of increasing. If I were working with smaller numbers I would have instantly seen the mistake. Thx for the tip :p

Really?? Life's really going to suck for you if you ever have to do polynomial long division.

i.e. 4x^5 + 3x^4 - 7x^3 + 8x - 9 all divided by x^2 + 6x - 2

I can divide with no problem, I just do it in my head, rather than the elaborate long division method. Also, I suck at anything but basic math.

I remember multiple math teachers telling the class that this would be important some day.

Still waiting for that day.

multiply the first equation by -4/3 and you get -160x - 80y = -960, then u add equation one to equation two and you get 40x = 120 and x = 3. plug x = 3 into equation 1 or 2 and u will get y = 6.

if you are so inclined, u can also solve this very quickly with a calculator. set up a 2x2 matrix (120 60, 200 80), invert it, then multiply it by a 2x1 matrix (720, 1080) and you will get (3, 6).
