Dallas

So I may be moving to Dallas relatively soon. Can anyone here give me an idea of what its like living there? The good, the bad. Neighborhoods to enjoy or avoid. Decent places to live for someone under 30. Is there any asian culture to speak of?

I've been looking online but I don't know much about Texas or Dallas; the possibility of moving there only recently came up.

Where do you live now? My company has an office in north Dallas that I've spent some time at, and it seems like a nice place. Not a lot of traffic, inexpensive housing.

Dallas is nice. It's very fast paced. What kind of car do you drive?
There are plenty of apartment complexes there, and they are not too expensive.
But there are good sides of Dallas, and bad sides.

North Dallas and it's suurbs and NorthEast Dallas and suburbs are ok. West and and south are sh!t. You're best bet is to move to a suburb like Plano, Garland, Frisco, or Richardson.

I live in Seattle now so I imagine there'd be some culture shock going to Dallas.

I don't own a car at the moment since its so expensive to own one in the city but if I move a car would be purchase number one.

i doubt there are many asians in dallas. houston is the capital of south vietnam, however.

Are you looking to rent or buy a house? You definitely need a car to get around in Dallas. By far and away, an important purchase.

Nice areas: Carrollton, Garland, Richardson, Addison, Plano, Frisco. (Ordered from least expensive to most) You're always 5 minutes away from a highway.

I'd be renting initially, my credit is shot. This move does come with a pay raise which should help in addition to the lower cost of living but of course I'd be picking up car expenses.

Most (if not all) of those areas are north/northwest of Dallas correct?

big asian communities in richardson and garland. basically all suburbs... lifestyle will be commuting. find a place in richardson or carrollton.. whichever is closer to work (one's east the other is west)

Yea, they're all mostly north/northeast of dallas. They're just on the verge of Dallas. It's hard knowing where the Dallas city limit ends and these cities begin. (My parents live in Carrollton but right across the street is Dallas, if that's any indication)

what part of town are you working in? i currently live in addison...it's a cool place. lots of eateries and restaurants

for the young crowd, lots of people have been moving to uptown

if you work in downtown, i advise against living out in the northern suburbs like plano and frisco...it's so far! although houses are cheaper out there

Uhm, i remember reading an article about how Dallas has one of the most corrupt police forces in the country. Moral of the story: don't f*** with the cops there.

I would highly recommend Plano, Garland, Frisco areas. Very posh, excellent facilities and extremely inexpensive.

Just rent an apartment / house along preston / coit road and you would see that all amenities are close by.

PM me if you need more information.

Do Indians come under "Asians"? There are lots of them in IT - it that your field too ?

You can enjoy their magic shows - poof goes your job !! 😉

Lived there for 10 years. Initially lived in Plano then bought a house in Mesquite. I liked it there a lot. Now I am back in the north country though.

I lived in Addison for a summer. It was typical suburbia. I liked the weather (I love warm weather), but it would be triple digits and you wouldn't know it because it was so dry. Wear extra sunscreen and don't have a dark-colored interior w/ your car.

I would be working in Richardson so living north wouldn't hurt my commute.

As for corrupt police I lived in the crappier parts of New Orleans, it wasn't so much corruption as the assumption that if you are in that neighborhood you are probably up to no good.

Well Indian wasn't quite what I was thinking but I'm not in IT so hopefully no magic shows for me. 😉

There seems to be a consensus that Dallas is pretty nice overall with a few seedier areas to avoid, and at least thus far nobody has said its a cesspool or hell on earth, so thats a good thing!

There are other alternatives to living in the suburbs. There is a growing community of people who live in downtown proper, as well as in Uptown, West Village, and Oak Lawn (which are just north of downtown).

Most people live in the northern suburbs and face a 1 hour commute into downtown. If you work there, why not live there? There is an expanding light rail system (DART), so you might check living areas along the rail lines. Much depends on where you work... where would your office be?

Without question though, you will need a car... if only for getting around in general. I live in a townhouse near downtown, and commute out to Las Colinas (north Irving) bypassing all the traffic heading the other way.

PM me if you want more info.

*edit* Since you're working in Richardson, you might as well live there!
