DALLAS ? When editorial writers at The Dallas Morning News chose the illegal immigrant as the newspaper's Texan of the Year, they expected some criticism. But not this: 800 blog postings and more than 150 letters to the editor blasting the decision.

Some of the critics threatened to cancel subscriptions or pressure advertisers to stop doing business with the paper.

"What an asinine article!!!" exclaimed one reader.

"What part of stupid are you guys that support illegal aliens? This puts us ALL in danger," another wrote.

Editorial writer Rodger Jones said he was "surprised at the nastiness" of the backlash, some of which came from readers who had only seen the editorial's headline.

The Texan of the Year designation, announced in Sunday's paper, has been an annual year-end editorial page feature since 2003.

It recognizes ? without passing judgment ? someone who has had a major impact or effected change in Texas during the past year. Previous recipients included the city of Houston for its response to Hurricane Katrina and a former police officer whose two sons died in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as George W. Bush and Karl Rove.

None provoked a reaction on the scale of this year's choice, Jones said.

"All of those readers, it seems to me, who objected, conceded that it is a huge story," Jones said. "They just don't like the label applied. They construed that as some kind of honor that we bestow."

In its editorial, the News noted that illegal immigration directly affects Texas because of its proximity to the border and reviewed how policies aimed at curbing it have played out across the state.

It's somewhat disingenuous for the editorial writer not to expect a large negative backlash.

But, to be honest, them picking "Illegal Immigrant" as Texan of the Year because it was a big topic/story in 2007 doesn't really bother me, because I agree it was a big/impactful topic.

However, it does show their lean in that they say Immigrant instead of Alien. Supporters of open borders and amnesty always want to cast this as an immigration issue instead of a breaking-the-law issue. People who come to this country legally are immigrants, and they are welcome. People who break into this country illegally are aliens, and they are not welcome.

Sad thing is, the illegal aliens have contributed far more to Texas than a lot of people.

Before I clicked on the thread I thought "The paper probably selected a newsmaker of the year like Time, but that was too complicated for the stupid rednecks and they got mad".

I like being right all the time, but it can get a little boring sometimes...

As you seem to know, of course, there is.

I'm old enough to remember, as a kid, the yearly TV public service announcement reminding "resident aliens" to register. It always made we kids giggle.

I'm not right all the time but, like you, figured it was the same thing, so today we get to both be happy about it.

Did they contribute to Texas or cost less than welfare mothers? When you factor in the costs of health care, education, and criminal justice for the illegals and their families, are they really making a contribution or is it just a case of the nation increasing its population of poor, needy people while making it more difficult for poor Americans to find jobs at American free market wages (and not artificially depressed wages)?

Couldn't you just as easily say that when someone crosses a border illegally, breaking into a country, that they're an invader and not an immigrant?

Basically yeah. The surge in welfare applicants, hospital billed covered by TAX PAYERS DOLLARS, overwhelming decline in educational standards as a result of children from illegal aliens (and the demand that the US should dumb down text to accommodate), and crime/transformations of ordinary cities into slums are just a few of the many negatives of an unsupervised/unpunished illegal population.

It's just one big vicious cycle. The US has forced cheap labor costs on the American public, which might seem appealing to the ordinary folks, but in reality it has segregated blue collar jobs originally meant for CITIZENS to NON-CITIZENS.

This has created a total upheaval in civil services. Once average jobs have become trash employment, only suitable for those willing and able to survive on low-income. The free clinics and social services are dominated by children of illegal aliens (I have witnessed this all across SoCal), which has led to blatant nepotism towards their fellow brethren. Those who say nay are immediately sandbagged by the hypocritical pc zealots, with slanders like xenophobe and bigot.

But whatever, 10 years from now all of us realists will be given the privilege of saying, "I TOLD YOU SO!" to the remaining idiots who still cling to the illusion of "economical" contribution sourced from illegals.

That's what they call US troops.

Double standard much?
