Going to Dallas next week on business and the work is mostly at night in the wee hours of the morning so I pretty much have all day to do stuff. I've never been to Texas.. I love music so anything music oriented (cool guitar shops) would be appreciated advice wise. If any of you scalliwags wanted to meet up for a drink that is probably do-able :p

Hmm. There aren't too many extremely cool places in Dallas, but I'll give it a go.

The only guitar shop I know of is GuitarCenter, or a few pawn shops. You can walk around downtown to kill a day, through the West End or Farmer's Market (awesomely fresh produce). There are a few good shopping locations around town -- Schnyder Plaza (sp?) or Mockingbird Station. White Rock Lake has a nice walking/running/biking trail around it (~8 miles) -- very scenic. Let me know if there is anything else you want to do specifically.

What part of Dallas? When someone says Dallas it usually encompasses the entire Metroplex which is about 9,000 sq miles. Do you know where you will be staying?

Well there are a couple of Guitar Center superstore here. As far a independent shops there are too many to list, just check the yellow pages. Same way with nightclubs we have tons and tons, many that feature live music.

Here Is the GuideLive list of music events next week, I see Clapton, Gladys Knight and Chuck Mangione will be in town amongst others

GuideLive.com is a wealth of information, you may want to check out more on that site.

You may want to check out:
The Ball Park in Arlington, Six Flags over Texas, and the construction site for the new Cowboys mega stadium (all located right together)
AAC (American Airlines Center)
Reunion Tower
The Nokia Theatre in Grand Prarie and Lone Star Park(Class A horse track)
The West end (cool clubs, and the Kennedy museum at Dealey plaza, etc...)

If you like old west stuff take a trip over to the Fort Worth Stockyards area

Guitar shop was the only thing specific, was hoping to find a cool local place, not a GC, thanks for the suggestion though.

And to JL, sorry I really don't have too much info other than my manager saying 'You're going to Dallas next week to do xyz' I'll find out more details as they filter in. I'll have a car so I can go somewhere as long as it doesn't take forever.

Well there is tons to do here, just really depends on what you want to get out of being here. If you just want to go looking at guitar shops and clubs then look them up in the yellow pages. If you want to learn, then definatly go to The Dallas Book Depository and learn more about JFK. Go stand on the Grassy Knoll. If you go there is a diamond in the street that marks the point where JFK was shot. There is also a Conspiracy theorist meusem on the other side of the JFK memorial that has some neat stuff. There is also guys selling the conspiracy newspapers that show pictures from the autopsy. If you are downtown and want some good BBQ during the week, head west to Motor Street. Take it north and you will find a place Called BW's BBQ. it's a small place but has some damn good BBQ.

Stay Away from SawGrass Steak houses. They suck. If you want a good place to eat. Go to Richardson. Right off of i-75 and Spring Valley is a place called Bone Daddy's. The food is good but the waitresses are smokin hot.

Crap!:) A warning to others, mute your speakers before clicking on that link!!!!!!

My office door opens into an open bullpen type area, and when I clicked it a group of sultry chicks practically scream "Welcome to Bone Daddy dot com!" and the folks all looked at me like I was on some porno site:eek:

Oh and since you're from Chicago, you might try the DART rail system (use the TRE line) to swing over to Fort Worth. Lot's of cool stuff downtown there. DART Rail Map

Strip clubs and churches abound.

Most of the cool areas are focused on shopping. If you don't want to blow a bunch of cash you could go to a park or something. I live in the suburbs so I'm boring as hell.
