ATLANTA (SI.com) -- Dale Earnhardt Jr. suffered moderate burns Sunday morning when the car he was driving was involved in an accident and caught fire while practicing for the American Le Mans Series' Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.

Earnhardt, who regularly competes in the Nextel Cup series, suffered what track medical officials described as "moderate-sized burns of moderate intensity" in the facial area and lower extremities. For precautionary reasons, he was transported by air to the University of California-Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif.

Earnhardt was driving a Chevrolet Corvette C5-R in a 30-minute practice session when the accident occurred. The car spun and impacted a barrier in the Turn 8 section of the road racing track and then caught fire. Earnhardt quickly exited the car on his own and was then assisted by safety crews.

Earnhardt, who is second in Cup points, was scheduled to co-drive in Sunday's American Le Mans Series sports car race with veteran road racing driver Boris Said. The team has withdrawn the car from the race.

The Cup series is idle this weekend, with the next race July 25 at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Hope it isn't serious :(

I bet that his family were scared to death by it... after what happened to his dad.

Hope he heals quickly.

Yep. I'm not a NASCAR fan, but by living in the heart of Kentucky, I know that any and every redneck that lives here lives and dies by what Earnhardt Jr. does. I thought the Commonwealth was going to shut down for a week when Earnhardt Sr. died a few years back.

Here's hoping he's ok, but you are right about the media coverage :).

Did I say he did? I don't dislike Jr I dislike Nascar's and the Tv crew's constant babbling about him. This gives them an excuse to babble about him even more. Atleast NBC isn't as bad as Fox about it.

That's what happens when a Nascar driver gets behind the wheels of a REAL race car on a REAL race track.

Actually, I'm sure Earnhardt has a few C5s of his own at home, next to the Viper and/or Ferrari.

Joke's on you-the Nascar Cup series races on the same "REAL race track." You can proceed to insert your foot into your mouth.

Wow, why would anyone limit their cars to American brands? Or more specifically, GM? If I had all the money in the world I can guarantee you there wouldn't be a single GM in my garage.

So, your point is that he is owned by GM? Or that he has poor taste in automobiles?

Yea because GM has never made a good car and nobody ever restores them or collects them.

Anbd Dale Jr. and His father were part of a C5-R racing team that came in the top 5 (mayeb 3) when they raced. In fact Dale Sr. was doing so well he stayed out longer then the other drivers if I remember correct.

yea, i would never want a 63 corvette split window, nor a C6, nor a c5, nor an SRX, nor a monte carlo SS.

I guess we are forgetting that Jr and Toney Stewart were on the team that should have won the 24 hours of daytona this year if the suspension hadn't broken in the last 15mins of the race.

Spare me, I know who Dale Jr. is.

My point is that anyone who limits their car ownership to GM is either a spokes hole for GM or stupid. There are much more interesting cars in the world if money is no option.

On your list, the only one I would consider worthy would be the split window Vette. Look at the ZR1, that was touted as the greatest Vette ever in the early 90s and now any stock Vette will eat it up. So, what's the draw? The fact that they only made a limited number?

well, the split window is also the only one on that list worth more than 100K the SRX is supposed to compete, and beat the foreign vehicles in its class, the SS was a sweeet sleeper car when it was first introduced, and the C6 just pwns all. the C5 is also a nicer vette.

If that's the case then what is the point in mentioning it in this forum? How does that elevate GM over Ferrari?

Geez everyone relax. It was a joke on the whole oval racing thing, because the accident occured in Turn 8 and in NASCAR there's usually only Turn 1 and Turn 2. Yes I know that he drives other cars on other types of tracks/road courses for fun and profit. I try to stay ignorant but I do live in the heart of NASCAR and DEI country.

Anyways, I hope he recovers fully. It'll hurt his endorsement career if he's got permanent burns to the face, and he is the face of NASCAR at the moment.
