Hi,
A friend of mine is having trouble getting internet to reach his bedroom as the wifi won't penetrate the walls. My plan is to use a homeplug from the back of his verizon gateway to his bedroom and feed ethernet into a secondary router with a separate SSID. Would this be possible? I don't have much experience with Verizon equipment.

Many ways to do what you want.
You can use a repeater, or bridge mode, or...
Did you already buy the other stuff you have mentioned, and if so, what brand?
 
I have an asoka pluglink 500 mbps homeplug and was planning on just getting a cheap tp link router for the room. He lives with his parents so I think it would work out better if he had his own SSID for his computer and game systems.
