daisy chain wireless routers

Hey guys, is it possible to daisy chain wireless routers? Right now I have a D-Link airplus xtreme G wireless router in the basement. However the signal becomes very weak upstairs. So can i put another wireless router somewhere on the first floor, and have it relay the signal so I can get it upstairs?

Mind that I am an EXTREMELY noob at networking, so please take time to explain this 🙂.

thanks in advance!

I know it's called "Ad-hoc" mode and that it's definitely possible. When I installed my router, it gave me the option to chose "Infrastructure" or "Ad-Hoc" mode. (Infrastructure is the common setup using the router as an Internet gateway for all connected computers.) So it's definitely possible, although the ease of setup may vary by brand (My router's linksys).

However, I am equally noobish and aside from knowing the jargon and theory, I have no idea how to accomplish this 🙁

Option 1. Daisy chain with one CAT5e wire.

Can be done with any Wireless Router like this, http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

Option 2. Wirelessly (Without a wire), Repeater/WDS solution.

Wireless Modes - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html

Can be done with Routers that support WDS or can be made into supporting WDS with 3rd party firmware.

Set WDS

Reasonably priced solution is to buy few Wireless Routers and set them as WDS system

You start with two units, and continue until everything is covered.

A base unit should be High Power Output for Extra Wireless range,
As an example, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...p?Item=N82E16833162134

Followed by this, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833162017

If the Routers cannot do WDS as is, all units should be flashed with DD-WRT firmware

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Installation

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/ind..._Linked_router_network

The base unit that is attached to the Modem should be configured, as a regular Wireless Routers.

WDS units configured like this, http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tut...ls/article.php/3628576

P.S. D-Link and Netgear 802.11g Routers do not support WDS and cannot be Flashed with 3rd party firmware.
