How come super nerds always have knives?

How can someone not carry a knife? When I see someone struggling with something a knife would easily take care of, I think "Oh, he's one of the useless ones".

Earlier today was a treasure trove of techno-goodies:

Left pants pocket - 2x 2gb USB drives
Right pants pocket - Palm & Blackberry
Left cargo pocket - 80gb 7200rpm pocket hard drive
Right cargo pocket - Ipod Touch 8gb

Not typical, but working for a school district in the IT dept. over the summer is always a crazy atypical work day.

Exactly. I can't imagine not having even a small knife or at least a multitool with knife blade on it. The thought makes me *shudder*.

I can't think of one single instance in my life where I thought "damn, wish I had a knife on me right now". I have knives in the places I actually need them; my pocket is not one of those places.

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thinks it's fucking weird.

I go to school and hang out with a weirdo that carries a knife. In the last 3 years I've seen him use it ONCE - when I needed to get a picture off the wall and he offered his knife so I could get the staples out without damaging the wall. It was a corkboard. Seriously, you carry a knife for 3 years for this? You're not Crocodile fucking Dundee, mate.

Hardly a day goes by I don't use a knife, and I like the convenience of not wandering the house looking for a tool. My primary knife is a Swiss Champ. Probably bigger than most want to carry in their pocket, but I don't find it obtrusive. Aside from the cutting blade, I regularly use most of the tools it comes with. From the fish scaler(works well as a dirt probe, and metal/plastic deburrer) to the cord hook(makes (un)tying difficult knots easier), and all the other useful tools in between. I find it hard to believe people NEVER need a screwdriver when they're far from a toolbox....

I have carried a knife with my since i was in boy scouts. I have had one in my pocket for so many years its odd not to have one. There has been very few weeks that i don't use it at least once.

Though i don't see the point of the big "fighting" style ones many carry. i use my knife as a tool not to fight with.

I'm a sys admin and use it all the time to open up boxes/packages.

That's the only reason I carry it. Maybe some on here carry one for protection but I don't think size of knife I carry would be much more helpful than a car key.

I am a creature of habit, so same as always:

Front left:
iPhone
Business card holder

Front right:
Keys
Money clip (with too little money)

Rear left:
Wallet

Rear right:
Nothing

Actually, a few years ago I reversed the front pocket contents. Took a while to get use to, but it made more sense to have my keys on the right. Yeah, I think about these things too much.

I'm the same way. Knives go in left front, keys/change/phone go in right front, and wallet goes in right rear. Snus and snuff is variable depending on exactly what I'm wearing.

Every single person who has ever posted a "daily loadout" thread on every web forum in history is a gun owner and really just wants to show off their gun. Everyone knows this.

Wallet
Keys (with bottle opener keychain)
Cell Phone

Sometimes I have change in my pockets too ... but otherwise ... that's pretty much the limit.

Oh yeah I don't keep anything in my back pockets. Wallet and keys are in front right, phone is in front left.

You could also win the lottery, but that's unheard of. Two is one one is none is bullshit. I'll take my 10 rounds vs. your spyderco knife.:hmm:

I didn't say I subscribe to that particular belief myself, and while rare, it is not unheard of. Neither is an accidental mag release while seated in a vehicle, which I have seen personally. And I don't carry a Spyderco...usually a Gerber or Buck...in addition to 10+1.

3 severs show up at my office on a pallet. No need to send the intern back to find scissors, just pull out my knife.

We get to the off campus server room and find the ties on the cables are too tight to feed any more though. How are we going to run those new cables? We could drive back to the office and get scissors, or hey, my knife.

Crap, one of the rail kits we are moving wasn't tooless. Had I know this I would have grabbed my toolbox and brought it with. I guess we will need to drive back to the office. Wait, my knife has a screw driver, we are good to go.

Ok, time to make new cables. Crap! the intern brought the wrong crimper, it's the one with the bad blade that can't seem to cut and strip cables for shit. No big deal, my knife can do that no problem!

Lastly, I got a damn splinter taking that pallet back out so maintenance could pick it up. Luckily my knife was just the thing to get that splinter out of my hand.

That was the last 5 days of my life.

My grandfather taught me long ago to never be caught without a knife. Not for any kind of defense (although I suppose given enough time I could probably kill someone comatose with it), but for straight up utility. It has been useful many times in my life, from fixing computers to cleaning wild onions while camping.

I've also toyed with replacing my belt with one of these http://www.survivalstraps.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=SS-BELT

To my fellow preparedness minded people, its' no use arguing with people who think they don't need to have any type of tool, etc on them, they are going to be those people who won't realize the mistake of their mentality until its too late or when they are caught without....
Like the old saying, "Those who know do not need an explanation, for those who don't no explanation will suffice."
