A few weeks back someone posted a link to an Atlantic article discussing Daesh (ISIS), and there was an actual decent conversation about it.

Today, I've stumbled upon a new article about Daesh (ISIS), in Der Spiegel.

Just thought I'd post a link to it, along with a link to the original article that I mentioned above which garnered decent posts.

New article: Goes into specifics on the structure of Daesh (ISIS)

The Terror Strategist: Secret Files Reveal the Structure of Islamic State

Older article: Dealt with the origin of Daesh (ISIS)

What ISIS Really Wants

For those of you interested, take a read and post a comment.

Pro tip: follow US Central Command on youtube for some excellent videos of air strikes against ISIS. They post new ones every couple weeks.

I'll read it later when I'm not tired but is this story basically how ISIS was created from former Saddam Baathist?

Daesh (don't call it ISIS please, thousands of women and girls named Isis around the world thank you) is an unholy alliance between jihadists and angry ex-Baath party loyalists who found themselves out of jobs after Saddam and his Baath party (the only party you could realistically vote for if you wanted to survive in Saddam's Iraq) was deposed. The self-appointed leader of Daesh intentionally put a lot of ex-Baathist military leaders in charge, rather than jihadis who knew nothing about intelligence or fighting. That's not new. What is new about the Der Spiegel article is just how far-reaching that ex-Baathist influence was. The article makes it sound like the non-jihadis are running the show. I don't know how true that is, though, as those ex-Baathists still have to pay lip service to the religious fanatics in Daesh.

I wish everyone would just revert to Daesh when speaking of ISIS.

I think of them that way myself these days, seems to be what the people in the area call them.

Immaterial I guess, and US news will still call them ISIS I guess.
Edited thread title and reference, left ISIS in parentheses.
