Dad will have a nice surprise when he gets back from vacation

Over the last couple years my Dad has done an enormous amount of work on/around my house. He did all the brick and stone work, helped with my Radiant tubing, driveway, and retaining walls.

He wouldn't take any money or repayment.

So his old grill has completely rusted out on the inside. The burners are just wide open holes now with zero heat control and he hasn't been able to find any decent replacement options for them. He's been shopping new grills.

My parents went on vacation and I snuck this in under his old grill cover yesterday:

It's a Special Edition Genesis that is all stainless in the inside - burners, deflectors, grates. It's also got the extra sear station burner which is handy for getting ultra high temps (over 650 degrees) or for keeping heat to one side for indirect cooking.

Will probably sneak in the day before they get back and leave a couple thick cut ribeyes in the fridge and get a phone call about that. Then probably get another one about 5 minutes after that when gets outside and lifts the cover off.

🙂

It really doesn't cover all the work he did, but it's a start.

Excellent. Surprises are fun for everyone involved... Well, except surprise parties. They suck. So do surprise early morning visits from the FBI... I guess surprises aren't usually that great, but this one should be cool :^)

expect to get yelled at for throwing out his old trusty grill 😛

Haha.

Nice job, I like subtle acts of kindness like this. Sometimes when you dedicate a lot of time to helping others, it is its own reward but you still wonder if it's fully appreciated. But something like this shows you know your dad, know what he would like, and you might even get some tasty steaks out of the deal.

It's in my garage. I'm sure he's promised it to somebody at work who will weld their own burners or something. I knew I'd get yelled at for tossing the old one.

He definitely wanted to stick with gas as he's getting lazy in his advancing age. And he wants stainless everything so it doesn't rust out.

Otherwise the Traeger wood pellet grills looked awesome. I might have to look into one of those for myself.

awesome gesture, OP

damn old people 😛

I've been wanting to fix up my great aunt's backyard for ages, but I know that even if she agrees to it on one of her more lucid days, the second she has a bad day she's going to freak out about her tattered old chairs missing from the yard.
