There's not much to suggest. The only 15.4" Vaio offered is the FS series.

Amazon.com has the Sony VAIO VGN-FS742/W Notebook w/ Pentium M 740 1.73GHz, 15.4-inch WXGA, 512MB, 80GB, DVD+-RW DL, 802.11b/g, XP Home $1299 - $100 Sony rebate (exp 4/30/06) - $150 Amazon rebate (exp 12/20) = $1049 w/ free shipping.

Not posted to Hot Deals because it's probably considered "ice cold" by some there, and that's a tough crowd, with thread crappers 100x worse than the post above me, But hey, if you absolutely positively want a Sony, there ya go.

The screens are VERY nice, although HP/Compaq and Toshiba have similar coated screens now as well.

I had told him to first try the powerbooks. He liked them. But then he looked and the vaios and said that it has to be a vaio and a 15.4" screen. But its not like you buy a laptop everyday so he doesn't mind paying a but more for peace of mind...

Are there any other light and stylish laptops comparable to the vaios?

Whats the difference between the 742 and 740? Everything in the specs looks the same.

Suggest some sleeker lighter notebooks. 14" minimum. Also link. Thanks. Don't mind web builders.

If he really has peace of mind in his head, then get him a laptop that will last a longtime, and has excellent customer service and technical support and excellent warranty service too, therefor, I suggest that your dad get a Z60M Thinkpad , if he can manage to pay $1200 for a brandnew one from IBM then he is golden ;)

To the unenlightened, the Thinkpads will be "unstylish" , "uncool" and "boring".

Green,
Lets start with the normal line.. What does he plan to use it for. Does he want to stick with 15.4 or would he prefer the 17" monster. What is the MOST he would want to spend including the extended warranty?

If your dad wants a true piece of mind and money is a nominal matter I suggest a lenovo thinkpad X41. Amazing screen and features though a bit pricey. It weighs in about 4.4lbs and is loaded. Dont buy a HP notebook because service is lousy and the notebooks conk out in a year. Dells are getting up there especially the Inspiron 6000. On ebay you can get one fully loaded with a 8x dvd burned for around 1,000 bucks. If all else fails get him the Sony FS. It looks hot and is a great notebook. Also if you have a Costco membership I think there is a pre-christmas sale. happy hunting

I dont personally have an issue with its abilities...just the premium it carries for being a "sony".

My exgirlfriend had a VAIO and it was a POS. Everything about it was craptacular. When she told me how much they spent for low tier parts I gasped.

hm...I bought my dad his 3rd VAIO already. If your dad doesn't know too much of computer. I think it is best to buy him the thing he wants. Afterall, you can't give a perfect gift but a gift he likes. Same as girlfriend and everyone as well. :)

just my 2 cents.

He would only use the laptop for basic usage including Visual Basic (he is learning it) and fox pro. Also for emails, online banking and word processing. He also travels a lot so I was suggesting to him to get a light notebook. A 13.3-15" screen would suffice. Weight it the primary issue after "looks"

I agree with Alex on letting him buy what he wants (Afterall it's his money ;) ) ...As long as you guys can't find something "cooler" looking (apart from apple), he is going for sony.

Another point I wanted to clear up was that Im currently residing in Karachi. Pakistan. My uncle lives in the US and he visits frequently. I wanted to use a british credit card registered to a british address. Would this be a problem? Or would I have to call up the bank and register the US address?
