Dad love thread, talk about a tough ole bird

JEBUS my pops is tough. He finally returned my call.

"oh, well...you know I was traveling Europe and I got a little sick" Really? Not feeling well? You OK?

"yeah, I had to stay over in Italy for an extra 10 days" WTF?

"Well, turns out I had a heart attack. The doctors really took good care of me. Thank goodness for travel insurance, I got to fly back first class. Do you know what first class is on an international flight? It's 14 hours of ass kissing. It was pretty sweet. So how are your tomatoes doing?"

DAMN, talk about a tough old bird. I swear people that were young in the Great Depression are some tough people. The respect I have for him is unwavering.

My grandfather is the same way. Living on a poor family farm with 13 brothers and sisters must have been hard, but the effects of a hard life on one's character are evident in all of them. They were made of sterner stuff that people are made of these days.

Sounds like he's ok, was it a free upgrade on the flight?

Italy Doctor's orders.

From what he was telling me by getting traveler's insurance on the trip he wasn't out a penny. Insurance paid for the care, hospital stay, 5 nights in a 200 euro/night hotel, etc.

After continually declining it, me thinks I will take it on every personal trip taken outside the US.

He's 86. He was a beat cop in Gary, IN in the 1950s.

must've been a mild one. most times people don't even realize they've had a heart attack when it's mild.

and if he's 86 and talks like this, "It's 14 hours of ass kissing. It was pretty sweet", it's obvious he's a pretty special guy.

Them old codgers were made of different stuff than people today. Baby boomers would have whined their way to their lawyer trying to find out who to sue, while emo kids would be slashing their wrists.

I have only seen fear in that man's eyes twice. He is a special guy. I love him very much and if he were to pass tomorrow I would still be happy.

Be it good or bad, my hardassness comes from him. Folks of that age and fortitude are very different than today. I hope to learn from their wisdom.
