This Toshiba 36'' HDTV was very impressive when we saw it @ Best Buy.

Unfortunately, I realize the "advantages" and "pleasures of DLP" etc, but even now that prices are dropping, we can't afford one. In addittion, our TV is in awkward spot that might allow a deep CRT like Toshiba.

So, I was looking at other options...

There is this MUCH LARGER :D RCA 52'' HDTV How is this one?

Toshiba 46' Widescreen.

These are all CRT's, so I'll assume BB's photos are desceptive :D

How about this Mitsu? I've heard nothing but praises for them...

The problem with a widescreen will be that the majority of the programming they watch will be 4x3. CRT's don't suffer from burn-in and other digital-technology fdrawbacks, but as a viewer, there is this "empty feeling inside" :D that arises when such realestate is seemingly "wasted"

What do you mean "These are all CRT's, so I'll assume BB's photos are desceptive" ?

The sets that you linked all have proper pictures.

They are CRTs in the fact that they are CRT Rear Projection Televisions, but they are not direct-view sets.

The space isn't wasted... the 4:3 image gets stretched to fill the screen. Some TVs do this better than others.

I would go for, in order: Mitsu, Panasonic, Toshiba, Samsung.

Notice how RCA is conspicuously absent from the list. They are notoriously unreliable sets and honestly you can do better.

Personally, I just got a 4:3 Samsung 54" HDTV for $849. Yes it's not widescreen but considering a 16:9 picture is still ~ 50" on it and I got it for well below cost, I'm not complaining. :D

Agreed. RCA is crap so don't waste your time.

CRT's DO suffer from burn-in. Trust me, I've seen TV's with it. As the other poster said, the stretch modes take care of it. If you can get a really big 4:3 then it's no big deal because the widescreen image will be just as big as the on widescreen TV. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go with another widescreen but that's me. I do agree with you about the LCD's and DLP TV's. They have some visiual flaws that bother me, I'm waiting until the technology advances some more.
