Hey All. A question regarding an all wheel drive vehicle versus a 2 wheel drive.

I live in Italy, near Milan. We dont always get snow in the winter, but sometimes we do. Maybe 10cm or a little more. It does rain a good bit during the winter.

Am looking at a purchase of a new Dacia Duster and was wondering if the extra 2+K euros for the 4x4 version is worth the investment.

There may be the occasional trip to the mountains in winter for skiing, but otherwise, the vehicle will mostly be used in and around the main Milan area. there is also the summer trip to Abruzzo (530KM or so) annually.

Is a 4x4 worth the money if I can afford it? Thanks.

I think you should get a Sandero.....

Anyway, for 10CM of snow you really don't need a 4x4. For an occasional ski trip I'd just toss some http://www.autosock.com/en/ in the boot and call it a day.

:) I've got three kids, so the Sandero is just too small for my needs. As for the 4x4, the initial idea was to go that way for safety in tricky conditions. But if it's not really worth the extra 2K euros given the fact that I wont be using this vehicle for off road driving, then I'd go 2 wheel drive only with good seasonal tires.

I only tease about the Sandero. It's a reference to an old joke on Top Gear :)

Even though my wife and I both drive Subarus you must remember that AWD/4WD only helps you get moving. It doesn't really improve steering and definitely not braking. So in tricky conditions the best thing to do is have good tires and drive in a manner appropriate for the conditions.

It's front wheel drive, so a little occasional snow should not be a problem with decent tires.
