DAC for my desktop....

looper

Golden Member
I have M-Audio AV40 speakers (with RCA's, powered, 2.0) and Sennheiser PC360 headset for gaming with my PC when the Boss is home.

I need a reasonably priced DAC that fits the above under @ $200. for PC gaming and music. I was considering one of the the Audio Engine models.

Thoughts? / ideas folks?

If you want quality more than you want features like surround sound, you can't go wrong with something like this:

Several other companies make similar units (Behringer, M-Audio, etc.) So maybe poke around and shop a bit. Used audio gear is also commonly available - prosumers love upgrading.

The consumer-oriented DACs like this one are kinda... well... overpriced snake oil, actually.

+1--Can't go wrong with the Scarlet by Focusrite. 🙂

It's what I have.

Thx for responses.

But I just want to improve the sound of my music files and PC games. I do not record music.

So? Don't record with it.

You're talking about getting a pro-audio quality DAC in a box with a USB connection. You can get one of those usb doodads like I linked from Crutchfield, (Best Buy sells 'em too) but the DAC won't be as good and you'll pay more for fewer outputs, crappier amps, and cheaper, lower-quality circuitry.*

Your choice.

*"How do they get away with it?" you ask. "How can they charge more for crappier stuff?" Well, it's simple. Self-proclaimed audiophiles who are shopping for USB DACs, headphone amps, and 7.1 surround home theater equipment aren't cross-shopping 2-channel prosumer audio gear. But since you're driving 2.0 speakers and headphones, it's perfect for you.
