D975XBX2 + XP doesn't find SATA upon install

I put my new system together using an Intel D975XBX2 motherboard, E6600 Core 2 Duo, and a Western Digital Raptor 74GB SATA Hard Drive.

I have an original Windows XP Pro disc from 2001 that I just opened (was using W98SE on my main computer).

I have tried a few times to install Windows XP Pro, but it keeps saying that there is no hard drive to install to.

Google search indicates pressing F6 and loading either a SATA device driver or the Intel Raid driver the board came with. There IS NO SATA driver on the Intel website and it doesn't say you need one. The Intel Raid driver doesn't do anything. I have tried changing bios settings and nothing I have tried works.

I think the problem is that the Windows XP Pro disc is too old to contain the proper drivers to recognize a SATA drive. If that is correct, what can I do about it?

Thanks for the help,

John

You're correct. Best way is to slip-stream Windows XP SP2 into your original XP CD, but you should be able to use Intel drivers via F6 method, too. Try the inf. driver or even RAID drivers. I'd think either of them would work.

I only have a windows 98SE computer to work with. The slipstream method won't work on my desktop (I think). In terms of the Intel drivers for SATA , I can't find them on the Intel downloads website for that motherboard.

Is there any place you know where I can find the Intel SATA drivers for XP to install on a floppy?

Thanks,

John

Try this.

Intel Inf Update Utility

Check the readme file. It might contains the F6 method.

Edit: Yup, the RAID drivers also contain SATA drivers.

Intel® Matrix Storage Manager

The Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager is designed to provide
functionality for the following Storage Controllers:

- Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) 82801GR SATA RAID Controller
- Intel(R) 82801GR SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) 82801GH SATA RAID Controller
- Intel(R) 82801GH SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) 82801FR SATA RAID Controller
- Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller
- Intel(R) 82801ER SATA RAID Controller

This product is available for use on systems using the
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 Processor or Intel(R) Xeon(TM) Processor
with the following I/O Controller Hub:

- Intel(R) 82801GBM I/O Controller Hub (ICH7M)
- Intel(R) 82801GR I/O Controller Hub (ICH7R)
- Intel(R) 82801GH I/O controller Hub (ICH7DH)

That sounds like the floppy disc that came with the MB. It gave around six choices so I picked one. I don't know which one was the correct one.

EDIT: THe manual said to choose the 82801GH SATA Raid controller driver in the instructions for setting up RAID (which I am not doing).

Had the same problem...then I found nLite. Now every driver I use gets slipped into my XP installation, from video to sound and everything else.
If you don't use it this install, try it next time. You can also cut out all the BS that MS adds to blaot XP. And nothing beats unnatended installs .Plus nLite is free.

Agreed. nlite rocks. Just be careful for the first use, especially when attempting to get rid of MS bloat. Some of the bloats are actually critical to functional OS.

That RAID controller device driver worked. XP recognized the drive after installing it. I guess I had picked the wrong one out of the list.

Thanks to all. After I am done I will make a slipstreamed disc for sure.

John
