D900 series NO overheat protection and just as hot as D800?!

Hi,

Aren't D900 models (all 65nm, right?) supposed to run much cooler then the D800.

Well, the benchmark at Tomshardware doesn't show much difference:

---
(900 Series) TDP Tcase
950 130 W 68.6 °C
940 130 W 68.6 °C
930 95 W 63.4 °C
920 95 W 63.4 °C

(800 Series) TDP Tcase
840 130 W 69.8 °C
830 130 W 69.8 °C
820 95 W 64.1 °C
---

For a better overview and reading the full article, please go here

1/ Am I seeing it correct that the D940 (68.6°C) isn't much cooler then the D840 (69.8°C)?!

2/ also, how come the D930 (63.4 °C) is much cooler then the D940 (68.6°C) which only runs a bit faster?! Strange??

3/ Don't ALL D900 models like D930 have Enhanced Halt State C1E, Thermal Monitoring 2 or SpeedStep support?! If you read over here it seems these are missing on D900's! Apparently they would add it in Q2 2006, but how we know for sure they did?! http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/default.asp also doesn't give any info about this, so how can you know for sure if it has ALL these heat related features or not if you order one?!

Aren't things like Enhanced Halt State C1E really important regarding overheat protection?! Does that mean there are D900's out there without overheat protection?!!!

If you order a D900, how can you check in advance if it has ALL these heat related features or not?!

Thanks to all who can help with the above questions!!

not all pentium d models have the C1E state.Only the recent ones do.And also the pentium d 9xx series have twice the cache of the 8xx series.
And to be honest,i don't know how to check whether it has those features.
I have a pentium d 930,and its running at 3.6ghz(from 3.0ghz stock) on stock cooler at 55C idle and 80C load.

I guarantee at that temp, you are throttling.

OP: The 8xx do run hotter than the 9xx series. I don't care what tom's says. Everybody here who has one of each knows. Stevty may reply, and he has both. But they are both hot compared to any Athlon64 or X2.

@mark-Don't u mean,it's the other way round.The pentium d 8xx runs cooler than the pentium d 9xx.

Huh? You just said the same thing as him backwards. The 9xx series is COOLER than the 8xx series. And ALL 9xx series CPUs have the enhanced halt state. That is all.

TCase is not the operating temperature. 900s are a bit cooler than the 800 series which allowed Intel to increase the operating clock for the higher end parts.

Those are not the rev. C Preslers, they do not have all the energy conserving features. The current rev. C Prelser does have these features, and a more optimized 65nm process that produces signifigantly less heat. So maybe try to compare the current version, not the 6 month old version...

Even the non-C revision Preslers run a good bit cooler than the 8xx series. My 830( A0 revision) was throttling at stock speeds on the stock heatsink hitting about 74c load. My 920's were running at 3.6ghz on the stock heatsink, and getting around 58c load, and not throttling. On water my 920 didn't break 52c at 3.7ghz, while my 805 runs at 57c on the same water cooling at the same speed.

Hi,

Where online can I see which D900 models do have Enhanced Halt State C1E, Thermal Monitoring 2 and SpeedStep support etc.. cause they hadn't all this initially?!

I really need to know this when ordering one ofcourse!!

Is there also a way to check your D900 CPU to see if it really does have all these features?!

Why did Intel initially release D900's without these heat protection features?! Which D900 models came without those features?!

I haven't found much info about this, so I don't know what to think about all this!!

Thanks to anybody who can give some good info about all this cause it's all very confusing to me!!

Don't ask so much at once(brain explodes)
There isn't a sure-fire way to know before buying.
One thing for certain is the pentium d 960 has C1 core stepping.Anything below that is the luck of the draw.
And only intel pentium m,core duo and extreme edition chips have speeds-step.But all recent preslers have C1 E halt state.
Like i said in the beginning, there's no sure-fire way to know.

Just like mentioned above...Tcase is not actual reported temps, but just a design operating parameter...Get above that point and there may or may not be issues....Consider it the ceiling for which anyone should run the INtel chips of that model...
