Would you buy the D90 or wait towards the end of the year for a possible replacement? I already have an existing D40 but I'm ready to upgrade to more autofocus sensors, better focusing, in-body focus of older lenses, bracketing, etc ..

I'm in no huge rush to upgrade but there's always the 'want' to upgrade. Plus, I can prolly sell the D40, kit lens and probably the 18-105 that comes with the D90 for a couple of hundred.

What lenses do you have? If you don't have many good lenses, I'd upgrade to better lenses first before upgrading the body. Then, when the D90 replacement does come around, you can just sell your D40, get the new model, and have some good lenses to go along with it.

+1

The D40 produces wonderful photos, even better with nice glass. Unless you already have some AF screw driven lenses, there is plenty of nice AF-S lenses to choose from.

On the other hand, don't let me poop on you parade. If you feel the D40 is holding you back, go with the body only D90, and spend the savings (vs the kit) on some fast glass. The D90 is a wonderful camera, if for no reason but to get off-camera TTL flash.

i'm guessing there is a D90 successor in the works but i'm not entirely sure about that. there is so little room currently between the D90 and the D300s it'd probably outclass a D300s from an IQ standpoint and while canon has from time to time been perfectly fine with that (the t2i basically matches the 7D, while the D90 doesn't quite reach the D300) i think nikon is less so.

I"m still on the fence but the reviews on the Tokina 11-16 are awesome but it wont AF on my D40. Think i'll list my D40 for sale, if anyone bites, i'll jump on the D90.

Thanks for the various inpuits.

I thought with ultrawide angles (much greater DOF), focus is less critical.

Even at 16mm f2.8, subject at 5 feet, your DOF is 3.52 feet.
