My first dSLR arrived today and so far so good. I skipped the D90 kit lens and bought the 16-85mm instead, mainly for the slightly wider angle and the closer focusing ability. So far I've been taking snapshots around the house to try out features. My black cats look like black cats instead of just black as they do with the compacts I've used before so I'm happy.

Here's a jpeg straight from the camera:

Note that this is a 5.1 meg file!

This was a full auto exposure with no flash (1600 ISO, f5.6, 1/8 sec, VR, handheld). What I really like about it is that there is no camera shake and the colors came out excellent in a fairly dark scene. The out-of-camera jpeg is very close to the RAW image, with the RAW having more intense color. There was very little degradation in the fine lines in the fur from RAW to jpeg.

I have another with a black cat at 1/3 sec, ISO 1600 where a bit of shake becomes visible and image noise comes into play.

can one hack its exif???

Yes one can but there would be no point in doing so here. I'm just happy with the results, no more purple fringes on the cats' fur.

Edit: If you are interested in modifying exif data just to bother people, try this:
ExifTool by Phil Harvey.
I use it in my GPS tracklog - photo matching perl script.

D90 is quite a bit advanced over the D200, hate to say. I have the D50 myself, and am seriously considering the upgrade.

The D90 has the dynamic control or whatever they call it. Its on the D90, D300, D700 and it makes a big difference, at least in JPEG.

D90 has pretty high NR by default (and yea High NR = details lost).
If you turn down the Noise Reduction, then it will be noticeable noisier under ISO1600.

Re-learning photography is kind of fun. In spending the last few years with compact digitals there are all sorts of techniques and lessons I had forgotten from the days of using a film SLR. The biggest one so far is the relationship between aperture and DOF. With compacts, near infinite DOF is a given except for really closeup shots. With an SLR, I have to think about it again. It's coming back fast though.
