That's an old laptop and yes, the fans either quit or are caked with dirt & vents clogged. Blowing out vents with air may help, but it may possibly need a disassemble & clean.. Can you hear a fan running? May need a new one if you can't..

I'd also check to make sure your Power Scheme is not set to "Home/Office Desk" or "High Performance", that might keep your CPU at the max frequency even when it's not really doing anything:

Windows XP: http://qwertytutorials.com/software_tutorials/windows_xp/change_power_xp.php
Windows 7: http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-prevent-your-laptop-from-overheating-windows-7/

"Max Battery" is a good one. You can test if it's working right with CPU-Z:

Your core speed should say something like 997Mhz most of the time.

No problems with mine, so I would follow those suggestions above. FYI my power scheme is portable/laptop.

I had one of those, and its successor the D630. No big heat issues surfing or playing Master of Orion2
