D2OL - Linux question.

I've got two machines, nodes 11530 and 11531, that are networked via an SMC 7004 cable/dsl router. Currently both are machines are running WinXP but I would like to swap node 11530 over to Linux and try to get better performance out of it. The machine is used mostly as a storage server (read, mp3) so whatever Linux version I run, I'm still going to have to be able to access it via the other computer.

Now the problem: I don't know jacksh!t about Linux. I mean, I still don't know if I have to go out and buy Linux or if it's free. If anyone here would like to spoonfeed me, for the good of the TeAm, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

dave

You can download RedHat Linux 8.0 directly from Linux for free. I suggest the buffalo.edu mirror... it seems to run fast for me when I need it 🙂 You download the ISO images, and burn them to CD and you're all set. You really only seem to need discs 1-3 if you are doing a vanilla install of the GUI OS.

I know nothing about Linux as well, but installed Mandrake on 5 machines effortlessly. I got the downloaded version. Its not one to use for everyday computing needs IMHO but for running D2OL it is sweet. I think my overall production is about 50 percent higher with Mandrake. I feel it was well worth it. 🙂

Hell Im even using it on my main rig, but only been surfing the net and using email with it. But heck thats about all this old man does anyway.. LOL

Check out the Linux FAQs available in the OS forum, in the FAQ section of anandtech.com, and download a copy of linux fro linuxiso.org. No more spoon feeding, read a bit.
