D2OL and Hyperthreading

D2ol work the same way as SETI with regard to Hyperthreading-run two instances of it, or is there a way to specify dual CPU's?

Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no built-in way to run 2 instances of D2OL.. But, just as with some other projects people have found ways of running it in Dual. Unfortunatly I don't know any. It probably won't work by just copying the folder and starting it again 😉
I would like to know the answer, also have a dually running one instance.

Well, at the moment, I just installed it to two different directories and have them both running. This seems pretty RAM intense (luckily I have a GB in that machine), but with only one process running, the CPU utilization stays at 50% max.
Same thing happened with SETI and that's how I solved it. Just curious. Anyone else running it on a Hyperthreaded?

That's how you have to do it.

i tried running 2 instances but it brought my pc to its friggin knees. the ram usage was so high that it crippled anything else i was doing 😕

Hmm, just checked the general speed of that machine now, still fast as ever. It has a 2.8c P4 and a GB of PC3200 tho, so that probably helps. How much RAM did you have, unforgiven?

512 of dual channel pc3200. it was using 75-100 megs per instance of d2ol when i tried it last week...needless to say i decided it wasnt the way for me to go in finding a project that would be of minimal resource usage.

Hmm, Dockwin.exe is using 54 MB and d2ol.exe is using 22 MB. That's 154 MB for two of them. Ouch.

I know. 🙁 That's what made me quit it. Especially on a bunch of 512MB gaming machines that's killer. Now I run Lifemapper which uses aroung 6MB of memory. 🙂

Ah. I was wondering about why I was getting only ~50% utilization. Just fired it up on new P4 2.8 (OC->3.18, 900 FSB). Have 512MB dual channel running at DDR400. Will I need more memory to run dual D2OL's? Well heck, I'll just give it a shot.

Hyperthreading is great, but I'm surprized it behaves so as to not use all the available cycles. I guess you have to run separate threads in order to make full use of them. Multiple threads seems like an no-brainer for a DC project. It seems like the DC folks could get an awful lot more cycles out of these modern machines if they could detect hyperthreading capability and launch separate threads. In the meantime, I guess it's up to us TA folks to DYI.

I just bench'ed various configurations. With one client running I got exactly then same level of production with HT enabled as disabled.

I installed a second client (in a separate directory) and tried it alone both with and without HT - same result.

I then fired up both clients with HT. The production level dropped by 34.25% for each of the two clients. That made for an overall production increase of 31.5% over the single client case.

I also found, as did SilverBack, that it didn't affect my use of other apps (haven't tried serious games).

So all of you D2OL'ers with HT machines, give the 2-client model a shot! We need every cycle we can get to hold off the raveging heards.

Just for completeness - P4 2.8 (oc to 900MHz FSB, or 3.15GHz), 512MB dual channel DDR400.
