If no one has been paying atention, we are going to be losing 1st place in approximatly 48 days unless we can do something drastic. Dutch Power Cows have been consistantly been completing 1,000,000 more blocks per day then we are. At that rate, they will catch us in 48 days.

probably sooner.. I suspect they've been saving up for another megaflush for getting to 1st place.

We've been paying VERY close attention....that's part of the reason why the article went up, in hopes that it would bring more people to the distributed computing forums.

time to bust out the Distrib Computing Asslamination threads in OT and GH (lets see if we can get a few of those OCers too)

I refuse to get excited about it. The DPC recruiting methods rely heavily on appeals to Patriotism (our country is better than your country). Just ask PeterN. We can't do that since Team AT is truly multi-national and multi-cultural. DPC knows that and will just have to accept their hollow victory when it comes.

No way. It's only a minor issue for people who join us. Look at the fact that there are Dutch people member of other groups (like Kifaru and PeterN for AT).

Most important factor for our success in recruiting is a good organization (thanks to e.g. the DPC-Crew), and the support for newbies at our forum.

Ok, so how much firepower would we need to prevent this? I mean, I was never involved in dc until 3 weeks ago. Now I have 5 computers behind between myself and a buddy.

How many systems of what speed would we need to equal their rise?

about the equivalent of 1,000 1ghz P3's running 24/7 to stop the bleeding. More if we want to increase our lead instead of the opposite.

Let us put it this way: a lot.

Anyone have access to some large computer labs, like a University? If we could get a few of those up, we could be rocking. Most of those machines are NT based, which means they can be remotely administered through Remote Cows. Something to think about.

Welcome to the team SolTek. :)

I will try and up my rhythm but I am exhausted nowadays. My move and Wombatwoman's illness took a lot of wind out of my sails. Moreover, I have no access to companies or schools and I can only ask people one at a time. At least I ask. And all my assimilations are proper, no hidden client without permission in my herd.

I have access to several hundred pentium II and pentium !!! computers at school. If only there wasn't that thing about using the school's computers/network for personal gain (the chance of winning $1,000 would get me in trouble). :(

at the risk of helping the wrong team here :)
You could ofcourse email dnet about the possibility of joining "hors concours". I suppose there are more cases like yours, and d.net would probably like the possibility of harvesting these herds.

The only thing they would have to make is a single checkbox on your dnet profile page saying: "if i win, i don't want the cash, donate it to charity."

A lot of the best herds are at companies and government institutions, often protected by the "personal gain"-clause, so especially teamed up with united devices, the option to refuse any reward could be a winner for dnet.

DanC,

Any update for us about any labs you might be putting up in the next month or so? :D
PLEASE? :D

I'm struggling to build my personal keyrate adding anything I can get at this point. I hope to be close to 100MK/s by years end, just after my 2 year aniversary.

I am working on getting a lab full (50+) of G4s online over Christmas break.
I just wish that I could get some of the labs up here at school cracking, but it is prohibited in school policy. :(

Sorry guys - the situation with the data centers has been shifted to a different geographical unit. We'll have other opportunities - but that one I'm afraid "ain't happenin' " :(
It was a done deal, then got yanked. - corporate politics.

The way to win this game is still one-on-one. Remember that that situation would have only been burn-in anyway. We need many, many 24x7 machines. It won't happen with some hulking behemoth of a data-center, because those are production machines. :(

Simply not true. It's not about countries. We had quite some belgians to join us, and even some other foreign ppl. I think what matters most is that tweakers.net is a very strong community, and thus making DPC a strong community too. And maybe the fact that we're doing better than you in RC5 also results in us recruiting more ppl than you, I think.. Ever played Counterstrike? Newbies always join the best team... ;)

I usually don't join in these type of conversations...but as I type this:

TeAm Anandtech is #1 in:

RC5
OGR-24
OGR-25
Gamma Flux

And making noise in SETI....Hmmmmmm

We may be slightly behind the DPC in RC5 daily output right now, but we're slowly growing.....maybe some of the newbies just don't know about us YET! ;)..May the best team win :D (Actually....We're all winners...Great team spirit, pride, friends and teammantes, and competition along with a huge amount of fun is what it's all about!) :D

PinBall:

If the issue would just be my making money from winning, I would agree to give anything that I won using the school computers to the school or a charity of their choice or something. Unfortionetly, being a long time team anandtecher, I would want to put any computers on the team, and that would bring me right back to the problem of making money, not for me this time, but for the team. *sigh*

Your idea of a checkbox to pass up any prizes is a good idea, but I don't know how well it would work in a team enviornment. Would the winner's team still get $1,000? Would it all be held back? Could it all be dontated to the favorite charity that dnet users have chosen (FSF I believe)? If these questions were taken care of by dnet if they decided to do this, it could be just what many people need in order to asslaminate a lot of computers.

A classmate of mine and myself were thinking of using some old computers at school to make a cluster or something. Him and I might look into it more then (I managed to get him interested in distributed.net). I guess I will just have to wait and see how things turn out.
