D Link Wireless range extender

i am trying to use it with an SMC 7004AWBR wireless router, which may be the problem....

but aside from that I just dont understand the settings, and the manual is far from clear.

Do I need to set the MAC of the DLINK to be the same as that of the SMC? And do I need the D-Link to have an IP address within the pool of IP addresses assigned by my SMC router?

edit:

i need to find the MAC of my SMC7004AWBR. The nice folks at SMC didnt put it on a sticker on the router, or in the setup page (192.168....) - part no 5312 - where/how can i find the mac address?

I don't have the wireless version but the mac address shows on mine. I haven't updated the firmware for quite some time so that could be different also. Anyhow it is in the setup page that you refer to. You have to log in giving the password then look in the toolbox.

I am not really up to speed on the mac address thing. I do know you do not want to set it to the same.

Edit
Missed one. Just make sure the dhcp server is turned on in the router and set windows to get ip automaticly. The router will give the ip within the pool addresses.

I just found out how to find this...I have a flaky router here and took the cover off and the LAN MAC seems to be printed on the ports on a sticker. To take the cover off, just pry up with you fingers from the back and it pops off. No tools needed.

The one I have here makes a sizzling noise, and the wired and wirless connection comes on and goes off.
