D-Link Switch (Is mine DOA?)

I am new to networking and have put together a small network at the office where I work. Currently I have three machines (1-Win95, 1-Win2k, and 1-Linux Server) hooked up to a Netgear 10mbps 4-port hub. Everything is working fine.

The plan was to add three more machines so I picked up a D-link DSS-8+ switch at buy.com (maybe don't need a switch but the price wasn't bad and I have heard that the performance is better). The instruction manual says that you basically have to make sure that the switch has some electricity and then you plug in your computers and your done and everything will work.

My switch doesn't seem to work, well I don't think it works. I obviously can't see any of the machines on the network and as a newbie the only test that I know, pinging fails. I have rebooted all of the machines while attached to the switch and still nothing. I go back to my netgear and everything is fine.

Only thing of interest is that once when I pinged another computer I got a message that said that something with regards to an ip address in the 200s (I didn't write it down, but all of my machines start with 192 and I am not hooked up to the internet). I then tried to ping that address that was in the 200s and I got a response back but it was really slow (250 ms).

So is my switch dead on arrival, or am I doing something wrong? I have emailed D-Links' technical support but no reply yet and phone is always busy. I am trying to decide if I should have buy.com replace it.

Thanks
