D-Link Router wont allow me to get on the internet

I recently purchased a D-Link DI-524 wireless router from Newegg to replace my current Netgear router. I hooked it up, ran through the install wizard, and nada. The indicator lights on the router say it's working fine and it seems like some packets are being sent, but websites (or other net access) doesn't happen.

I called up the cable company and they said 1) they can't troubleshoot a router and 2) it looks like it's fetching an IP address, meaning it's working?

I also hooked it up BEHIND my netgear router (so I can still get on the net with my main computer). Then I tried to connect to it wirelessly from my laptop, and I was able to connect to the router, but I STILL can't get on the internet from my laptop. Am I doing something wrong? I ran through the setup wizard and left all the values at default (dynamic IP address, using the mac address of the router - even though zoomtown doesn't use the mac address for anything). I also reset the cable modem. No go. Ideas?

Go to the status page on the router config page. Does it show that its getting an IP, DNS, and gateway information?

the page says:

DHCP Client Disconnected
IP Address 0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway 0.0.0.0
DNS

I tried the release/renew. Release works fine, but renew times out.

Also, if this doesn't work, all I really need the router for is the wireless connection. So, how can I turn the router into a wireless access point?

Powercycle both boxes. Plug in your modem first, wait for the lights to indicate sync, then plug in the router. Attempt a renew. If it wont renew at that point, then you've most likely got a bad router.

If its not getting an IP address, putting it in behind your old router to use as an access point won't work either, because it would need to get an IP from your old router in that situation.

Personally haven't had any issues with D-Link. I've had Linksys routers fail, and I saw a Netgear router that refused to allow a windows XP machine get an IP address from it.

Try cloning the mac address from the original computer. Lately I've noticed with comcast they require this to connect a router. It seems in setup the connect your account and it's access to the mac address.

Was the computer turned off when you power cycled the modem and router? If not then redo it. Power off all the computers, unplug the power cable from the cable modem and also from the router. Wait about 15 secs then plug the power back into the cable modem. When all the lights come back up plug the power back into the router. when the router has all of it's lights on then power up the computer.

I had a similar problem, and this worked for me... GL

So you have your broadband modem connected to your netgear router which is connected to the dlink?
Is the netgear connected to the dlink from lan port to lan port or lan port to wan port?

Do you have a static IP from your ISP or a dynamic one?
Do the client machines receive their IP via dhcp or did you set it statically?

If you wont be using the netgear router any more then you need to configure the wan port of the dlink to what your isp says to (ie dynamic or static IP). The you need to turn on dhcp (assuming your clients use it). Once you have it configured plug your broadband modem into the dlinks wan port and you should be good to go.

btw, r u using a vpn connection? i have a d-link 604 wired router and it works fine. using it right now. most likely a problem with your settings. also, most vpn connection relay on pptp.
