D Link Router help for newbie

On the advice of some people at work and some reading, I purchased a D-Link 704 Router to share 2 PCs over a cable modem. Got everything hooked up and can access the net and VPN to work from either PC with no problem (can VPN on one PC and surf on the other - that is outstanding!).

I followed the setup directions, but they aren't very clear (at least to me).

The problem is I can't share the files between the two PCs. I've read the ananctech FAQ for networking and both drives are shared out, the TCP/IP protocols are bound correctly and the file and print sharing has been activated on both PCs. Yet I still can't map the drives. I think the connection is there because I can ping each PC from DOS and get replies. Is this a Win98 problem?

Here are some specifics - if more is needed, please let me know what and where to find it as I'm still pretty new to a lot of the network terminology.

Thanks...

Main PC:
Name: kuh17049
IP: xxx.xxx.0.172
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (router address from IE)
group: bvsd
Share level access is checked in the ID section of Networking

Second PC
Name: kuh17049a
IP: xxx.xxx.0.122
Gateway: 192.168.0.1 (router address from IE)
group: bvsd
Share level access is checked in the ID section of Networking

Router:
IP: xx.xx.112.7
Gateway: xx.xx.112.1
Subnet: 255.255.240.0

dude unxxx those ip adrsses.Ok for you vpn problem the router prolly has a Filter. You have to go edit that and allow your vpn port to go thro...and forward the port.

The VPN is not a problem - I can VPN on one PC and use my ISP on the other PC. The problem is file sharing and/or mapping the other PC as a drive from the other one.

The xxx's below are 192.168 as they're on the inside of the router from the WAN side.

Anyone else have any ideas? I hate to think I just wasted $60 on something that wasn't necessary, but from what people have said, a router is the most secure way to go.

SHaring in W98se is simple. Im not sure about w98 first edition though. Should be the same. I have had times that I had to remove everything from the network properties then reinstall them and everything works great after that.

Do you see both computers in network neighborhood?

On one PC, the network neighborhood icon isn't there (which worries me) and the other PC has the icon, but doesn't recognize the other PC.

What about reinstalling the network protocols? Or reinstalling Win98SE? I really don't want to completely reinstall Windows unless its necessary, but I'm running out of HD space and need to transfer the files to the PC with the CD burner.

Any other ideas would be appreciated....
