D-Link Extreme G ( DI-624 & DWL-G650 ) - $96.99 AR @ buy.com

Be careful, DI-624 the Atheros chipset based version (with one antenna) is the one which is firmware upgradeable to 108 mbps, not the earlier (two antenna) DI-624's.

They are upgrading the older ones.....they are just taking their time with the Firmware updates.

The Wi-Fi landscape is pretty interesting these days with 108mbps "g" and 44mbps "b." Maybe we will see 216mbps "g" in a little while.

I know. With the exception of GigE, regular wired Ethernet is almost starting to look sluggish nowadays. I just hope the 2.4 GHz spectrum doesn't get overloaded to the point we start having major issues with the equipment interfering with each other. (of course, I see most of the 2.4GHz cordless phones dying off pretty soon as cellular coverage and pricing gets to the point where everyone starts cutting the cord - I've not had my phone line tuned on for over two years, and it has worked so well it almost seems weird to have a phone plugged into the wall anymore).

Just wait until VOIP becomes big in Wi-Fi PDAs and dedicated units. With Wi-Fi hot spots mushrooming and the cost of making calls using VOIP (free) is going to really change things.

before you guys get all googly eyed over the G spec and how it can hit 108 I'd suggest you look at benchmarks. I have yet to see a benchmark where a wireless device hits its theoritical max. I can on the other hand max out my 100Mbit NIC (or atleast come damn close.)

Newegg has this for $103, less than 10 bucks more, and you don't have to wait for a "week or two" at buy.com because it's on b.o. Free Fedex express saver too. worth the extra few bucks to get my hands on it quicker.

SMC SMC2804WBR $75 - $25 at JandR.com

and

SMC 2835W EZ Connect g 54Mbps Cardbus Adapter for $49.95 - $20 at Computersforsure.com( add $.05 more for free shipping.

And if you are big fans of marchitecture they have NITRO technology, twice the throughput and twice the distance of standard 802.11 cards.

Anyway they both support WPA and 802.11x (another new security authentication thing).

Unless DLink's come out with a firmware upgrade I don't know about, the DI-614 is 22Mbs, not 44Mbs.
Just got one - it now has a sticker on the box that says "now 4x" or something like that. Don't know exactly what that means, will try to post later - but it may well be that there is a mod they've done to get it to 44 mbps. In theory, anyway.

just installed my new DI-624 on my P4PE (w 2.4 gig P4) machine and DW-650+ card in XP laptop. Works flawless. Through a thick brick wall and floor both upstairs and downstairs, I'm getting full signal strength. Awesome installation instructions. Had to make one call to Dlink for tech guidance: I'd never done a network. She took me through the problem in under 10 minutes (XP had led me through a network wizard I should have ignored.) We deleted the conflict, and the kids now have DSL on their laptops instead of that clunky dialup.

Obviously I recommend Dlink's stuff, it's working without a hitch. The whole install including troubleshooting call was about 45 minutes. I got the products from Newegg in two days, free shipping.

One question for any savvy networkers out there: my wife has a Sony Viao running Mac OS9. Dlink's 650 doesn't work on that OS, anybody have any other cardbus adapters that they can recommend?

thanks
