From a kinda noob, lol, Can this unit be connected to my wired network via a cat 5 cable to make a remote area wireless? If not what unit would be recommended?

You can make the surrounding area wireless. If youre getting it for dirt cheap, id say get one, but wifi routers such as the belken pre n can get you much better coverage , functionality and options for not so much more if you look around.

I personally dont like D-link because everything ive bought broke , but im sure someone will tell you otherwise. I prefer linksys. Netgear is good, but ive had my problems with them too. I vote 1 for linksys for noob friendly setups.
