Hello, I just recently purchased a D-Link DIR-655 Extreme N wireless router to replace my old D-Link g router. I went with this router to try and gain more distance with my signal. I have a studio behind my house (roughly 150-200ft from house), and Im trying to hook my desktop pc up to the router. My desktop is equipped with a Linksys wireless g adapter (WMP54GS). When I used the desktop in the house the router and everything worked like it should with excellent signal strength and connection. When I moved it the desktop out to the studio and was not connected to the router it showed up on my available wireless networks with excellent signal strength, but as soon as I connect to the router my signal goes to very low to no signal. I also have a laptop that I use and when I am in the house with the router and standing outside, unconnected it shows a low signal and when I connect it gains excellent signal.....which is the complete opposite of my desktop?? I have attempted talking with Dlink in order to try and adjust my router but have had no luck. I am just wondering if I need the D-Link wireless N adapter (DWA-552) or do I need to adjust my router and adapter???? If anybody has any information it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Welcome to AnandTech Forums.

A Draft_N Router with a 802.11g card works at 802.11g.

With an N card you might get a little better connection, but I doubt that it would really solve the problem because an N card would Not make the signal at its location stronger.

The common solution is to add a second Wireless Router/Access Point closer to you destination.

Here are some ways to do so.

Extending Distance - http://www.ezlan.net/Distance.html

Wireless Modes - http://www.ezlan.net/Wireless_Modes.html

Wireless Bridging - http://www.ezlan.net/bridging.html

Thanks for the input. My only problem is that I cannot add another router because the distance is all outside and I have no place to connect a router. The router is currently in the best position facing that direction. Is there any kind of wireless extender or antenna that I can use....? Thanks again!

There are definitely replacement antennas that you can get. The device comes with regular omni directional ones but you can replace them with ones that have a directional component to them, focusing the signal in a particular way and that helps the signal go farther. You could for example get one of the flat window antennas and place it in a window that faces your studio in the back.

Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16833162131

However, keep in mind that having that antenna on the router doesn't change the performance of your PC end of things. You might need to swap out the antenna on your card or your wireless bridging device as well, so that you get up and downstream signals boosted.
