I'm thinking of getting this a/b/g tri-band, dual mode wireless router with 4 port switch to replace my SMC Barricade and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it, or links to reviews of it?

Thanks :)

Have a budget ?

Edit, I know where you can get an "A" WAP for cheap if that works for you.

Well, yeah, I have a budget, but I also need a router. So I figure why not get it all in one? And I want a/b/g for distance issues.

Are you sure that you need the 801.11a part?

801.11a makes the DI-774 about $100 more expensive, and it is only 54Mb/sec. unit, as oppose to the DI-624+ which is 108Mb/sec.

Single point of failure. :Q But thats just me.

Just deals has some cheap A gear here. Then you can get the D-link 108Mbs router combo from amazon.(seach for it) Total it will come to ~$120-$130.

I was under the impression that if one user with b enters the cloud, it drags all the g users down to b speeds. My neighbor runs a b network and his signal is strong in half my house.

So I wanted 'a' so I wouldn't have that problem.

In the newer systems 802.11g is dragged down but not to the level of 802.11b, the dragged down bandwidth is usually 2-3 times more then 802.11b

I do not think that just the presence of another 2.4GHz signal will necessarily drag the 802.11g down. It needs to be associated with your connection.

However, his strong signal might affect the general quality of your Wireless Network since both use 2.4GHz. If your Barricade is Wireless ask him to switch off his system for few minutes, and see what the difference with and without his signal is.

I'm getting about as good a speed as could be expected from my wireless barricade. I was wanting to switch to a to make that even better. :)

Wow, that is impressive.

The bummer is, my a/b/g adapter is built into my T41. :(

I guess I could disable that and install a D-link ExremeG, but that makes it such a pain considering I'd have a PC card sticking out the side. What would you do in my case?

OK, how about the DI-784 with the DWL-AG660 adapter?

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=299

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=305

They offer 108Mb/s turbo mode in both G and A. That way I could use A if G gets dragged down by the other networks near me. Also, unlike the 624, the 784 offers a G only mode so Bs in my cloud cannot slow it down (they can't associate).

Good idea?

BTW, an extra hundred wont make me sweat as much as getting something I wont be happy with.

Looks very nice to me, probably will be as good as the other set with additional 802.11a capacity. :D

Cool. I think I'll spring for them, then.

It's still a bummer that my internal a/b/g card will not be usefull :(
