D-LINK DI-604 Router Problems

Got a new D-LINK DI-604 router 2 days ago. Followed the directions to the letter dozens of times, still same result.

Every 25 seconds all of the indicator lights flash and the router resets (and XP tells me a network cable has been unplugged). It loops like that until stopped. If I hold the reset button in while turning it on, it will not keep resetting, and appears to function fine. However I can't get a proper connection from it. Windows XP will always say the connection is worthless and the internet might not work. During this time, no default gateway is listed in ipconfig (though an alien looking IP is) and I cannot access or ping the 192.168.0.1 control panel. Absolutely no response, from anything.

I've tried resetting, in fact, I carefully took the cover off and took out the motherboard and had the reset button depressed with an aligator clip for 5 hours. The firmware version is E-3.38, but without access to the control panel, I can't update it. Are these routers known to suck?

Also, I bought this router from my boss who bought them in bulk from Best Buy. It was a legal transaction that went through our company. Does this void the manufacturer warranty for any reason? Box was never opened and was still packaged.

Help please.

I had this with my D-Link DI-604 router initially, I believe it is overheating. Do what I did and place a southbridge heatsink on the CPU and 2 ramsinks on the voltage regulators.

Good luck!

I have this router and never had a problem until I moved some stuff in my server room and ended up putting my DSL modem on top of it... then I started having this exact issue. I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong, but later I moved it to another location and haven't had a problem with it since. So now that I think about it, it was probably overheating. I'm betting putting a few heatsinks on those hot chips will fix your problem if you dont have the router near some other device that is just adding more heat to your router.

Hope you get yer prob fixed.

Well, I'd consider overheating too but for the fact that it shows this resetting issue immediately after being plugged in and sitting on its rubber feet next to nothing hot. The motherboard nor the eeprom chips don't feel hot. I even plugged it in to test it after it had been sitting in my car in 30 degree weather.

My boss is giving me another one from his office to test out, so we'll see.

I dont have a 604, but my 704 has been splendid for a good long time. I have run 10 PCs on the net at one time from it with zero problems. It may be you just got a bad one, but I would investigate location and appliances nearby first..

Hey guys

Sorry I'm resurrecting an old thread here...

I used to have a D-Link DSL-300G ADSL modem connected to my DI-604 router. Recently, the modem suffered a spot of lightning damage (couldn't get on the net anymore, and couldn't even log into the modem's web-based control panel, with it connected directly to a PC.) The DI-604 still seems okay, because I can connect to it's web-based control panel, make changes, etc.

I bought a DSL-300T to replace the 'G' modem, but it doesn't seem to work with my router. The DSL-300T has it's own DHCP engine, unlike the DSL-300G, and you store your ISP connection details in the modem (whereas with the 'G' you couldn't). Realising that the router's DHCP engine was most likely clashing with the newer modem's one, I tried disabling the one in the modem. Problem is, then the modem won't connect to the net properly.

One thing that concerns me is that the 'WAN' light on the router now flashes continuously, whereas with the DSL-300G modem connected to it, the light would stay on permanently which is correct.

I also noticed that the router's IP is 192.168.0.1, and the DSL-300T's is 192.168.1.1... thinking this might cause a problem, I changed the modem's IP to 192.168.0.100. Still didn't help.

Can someone please help me?

im not sure if this will help you mobobuff, but when i first installed my 604 router around 6 or so months ago my network connection (task bar icon) would also popup telling me that the network connection has been lost. It would happen every few minutes.
Just for the hell of it i popped in a newer NIC card that i had laying around. And i havent had a problem since!

Im not saying go out and buy another NIC card, but it you or one of your buddies has one laying around it might be worth a shot.

Q: Are they known to suck?

A: Yeah in away they all suck. By All I mean all the Entry Level Brands not just D-Link.

They simply have a very sloppy Quality Assurance process, so a big percentage of quirky hardware is released into the market.

Q: Or am I just that unlucky?

A: taking the first answer into consideration you are somewhat unlucky.

Just in case you forgot: How to Fix Cable/DSL Internet authentication (password).

Connect the computer in question directly to the Modem and make sure that every thing works well when the Router is bypassed.

If it works well directly with the modem open a second box and try another Router. If it does the same thing get it all back to Best Buy.
