I tried to help my girlfriend setup a wireless network in her home and the connections are good so that all the computers connected to this router can log into the router(wired and wireless). As for connecting to the internet, that's a different story. I have tried using the wizard and manually release and renewing the DHCP info but it never renews and remains at 0.0.0.0. I also had her try using a static DHCP setup by inputting the values we got when we directly connected a computer to the cable modem but to no avail. Is there something I am doing wrong or is there something I am missing? She uses either Roadrunner or Earthlink(she isn't sure). Hope you guys can give me some input on this. TIA!

Hi,

This sounds a lot like your problem. My cable modem registers the first MAC address encountered on the LAN side. It then only allows devices (ie a computer or a router, etc) that match the MAC address to connect to the internet.

If you connected to the cable modem with the computer first, then swapped it for the router this may be your problem.

I was able to do a "factory default" reset on the cable modem via a small hidden button. However, I needed to connect directly to it with my computer to configure it before connecting it to the router (so it didn't help to reset the captured MAC address). The solution for me was that I could change the MAC address my wireless access point used to that of my computer. This fooled the cable modem and everything works.

I suggest you either try changing the MAC address of your router to that of your computer NIC or find a way to do a factory default reset, then connect the router afterwards (instead of any other device).

Good luck,

Andy

Thanks for the help. I tried your suggestion but no go. Girlfriend gave me a hand and called D-Link tech support for me. Pretty much they just made me reset the router, turn off modem, turn off router, turn on modem and wait for connection and then return on the router. Worked like a charm after that and made me feel like an idiot. Oh well, at least it's working now.
