Aren't cable modems pretty much the same far as "performace" goes?

I have a 3yr old, non-web managed, Toshibia cable modem.... I was having problems with my Comcast cable service and the tech said "its probably your modem....u should get a new one"

Well, turned out the problem was some crappy filters that AT&T installed years ago was casuing the issue....once removed, I've been fine since.

But...... is it worth $42 to get this modem? Will it continue to support Cable standards a few years down the line?

Comments appreciated it.

I grabbed one from amazon a month back. Comcast decided to upgrade the network and not tell me my modem was no longer supported. Their answer was always pay $50 and we'll come tell you. Rant aside, it has been working well. May not be worth upgrading to, but good if yours dies or is fazed out.

think I'll stick with my current modem (Toshiba PCX1100U) it's on the "Comcast approved cable modem list"....but just barely...
