D-Link Confused Instructions

I'm finishing up the build of a HTPC (Vista Home Premium 32 bit), putting in a D-Link WDA-2320 wireless adapter and I can't figure out the installation instructions.

1. A blow-in sheet in the box says in large letters, "STOP! BEFORE YOU START YOU MUST PHYSICALLY INSTALL YOUR NEW HARDWARE BEFORE CONTINUING" Sounds pretty straightforward; put the card in and install the drivers off the CD, right? Not so fast, buddy boy!

2. The Quick Install guide has this dire warning, "Warning: Do NOT install the WDA-2320 Desktop Adapter into your computer before installing the driver software from the D-Link CD." Ho,Ho! Who'd be dumb enough to do that???😱

3. A little bit later the Quick Install guide proudly proclaims, "After installation, the D-Link WDA-2320 uses the Wireless Connection Manager as the management software." Wooo hooo, I don't need no stinkin' D-Link stuff!!! Or do I, as the card doesn't seem to work.

After all sorts of attempts, I invariably get that the installation was not complete and that a dll by the name of apsapply isn't there. I've got an uneasy feeling that some of the instructions are for XP and some are for Vista, but the result is, I'm stumped.

Anybody got any ideas?
 
Remove the card and reinstall it (physically and driver wise) powering off between. Let it install the wireless utility and use that (always better than built in windows support). If you must use windows zero config then disable the wireless utility after it's installed and make sure the zero config service is started/automatically.

You can't have both - zero config and the wireless utility, they will "fight" over each other and cause all kinds of hair pulling.

Which do you recommend I do first, install the drivers and subsequently install the physical card, or vice versa?

"Zero config" is the native Vista driver?
