Anyone been successfull with one of these (DWL-1000AL)? I can't connect (WIN98 OS). I know my Lucent Silver WaveLan PCMCIA card works. I am successful with an Apple Arport. When I try to manually assign the Access Point an IP (192.168.0.10) from my statically assigned (192.168.0.1) notbook it says that the IP address can not be assigned. I can't find any support for trying to get past this point. Scanning for the Access Point does not work. Thanks for any help.

Wow! posting threads to myself. This is fun. If anyone cares I got it fixed. No where in the manual did it say to try connecting through a wired LAN first to config the AP. The manual sure seems to make it sound like you can find the AP with your wireless client. Any way, once I hooked it up to my LAN I was able to connect, config and off I go with no wires!

I had a similar problem with my linksys. The default ip address was different than my home lan. The only way I could talk to it was via usb cable.

Although I was able to set the access port and my laptop correctly where they communicate, I could not access the network via the pc card. Did you have to configure you card differently?

I am stumped. If you have any information please post here or PM me.

Thanks,
Vince

Vince,

Here is what I did. I am using the 192.168.1.X network. I am using a 4-port Linksys Cable/DSL router for access to my cable modem. It is my gateway. All other hosts (2 PCs and D-Link AP) are plugged into the Linksys router's ports. Make sure you are using a cross-over cable to connect your AP to your hub/switch. Make sure the "link" LEDs on both components are lit. My addressing scheme was pretty simple:

Linksys Router 192.168.1.1 (Default Gateway)
D-Link Access Point 192.168.1.2
All other hosts 192.168.1.3-254

Of course, as you know you can use any private addressing scheme you like. It appears to me that the key is to know your default gateway (for Internet access) and make sure your AP is correctly connected to your hub/switch.

The AP is supposed to do DHCP, but all the reviews I read, many complained it did not work. Static addressing is a bummer if you have a lot of machines, but for a home network it's OK. Good Luck! If you still have trouble, let me know, we'll get it to work.

Mike

Worth noting - PC magazine just came out with a review of access points and the Linksys was fastest for the home user market!

Thanks Mike,

I got it to work. It seems my pcmcia lan card driver was screwing something up. So far it is working fine. Wireless network connection for a laptop is pretty cool!

Thanks for you help,
Vince
