D-link 713P positioning question/antenna positioning question...

Entity

Lifer
After many months of dealing with RMAs and other crap, I've finally got a working Dlink 713P wireless router. Right now I just have it setup underneath my cable modem (they are stacked), and the antenna are positioned straight up. It's about 3' off of the floor right now, about 6' below the ceiling. I'm usually getting "low" signal strength at 11mbp/s on my laptop, which has a Dell TrueMobile 1150 (rebadged Orinocco Gold). This is basically resulting in me getting around 400-600kbps, according to dslreports.

My roomate, using a Netgear NIC MA401, gets similar results - this is from a distance of approximately 30', two rooms away. The router is in the corner of the house, and we're in the living room right now - in the center of the house.

The basic question I have is - what should I do to maximize our connections? Though most of the connections will be done in the living room or upstairs, we can't move the router to a more central location, because of where the main computer is. How should I position the router, the antenna, etc., and should I consider a booster of some sort?

thanks,
Rob

As high as possible about 10?- 20? bellow the ceiling, as clear as possible from obstructions, in a middle of empty space.
