I finally got a laptop so after 3 years with a nice wired setup I went and purchased a dlink 634 M router so I could go wireless.
Even before trying the laptop I start fresh with one wired computer that has xp home on it.

First thing the router is 192.168.0.1 same as my dsl so I go in and configure the router to 192.168.10.1 fine.

then I check I can see the modem and its detail screen..but can't get on the internet.

then after release and renew fine I can see the net.
boot up another computer this one with xp pro on it..
same thing router and modem there but can't find anything on the net.
so same thing after a while its up and running.
SAME THING when I boot the laptop...it can see the router and modem but no internet...NO DNS.
after a while it to can connect to the internet and find places WHEEEEE

Today I come in power up the router and modem.
I power up 2 computers neither can get to the internet.
both can connect to the router and can do a 192.168.0.1 to the modem.
But neither can connect to anything else.
I release and renew the router....whooo hooo computer 2 can connect to the internet.
computer 1 xp home..NO GO....shutdown and restart computer 1 NOTHING

No matter what I do it can log into the router and the modem but can not connect to the internet.

It shows status of connected
ip address 192.168.10.100
default gateway 192.168.10.1 (router)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

but it does not show a dns server like the connected computer. (xp pro computer)

=====================

why is this router giving me soooooo much trouble ?
Is it something in the settings that it can't understand what to do or I have something set wrong or ?

It seems to all boil down to no dns on the computers that are connected to the router. Some times release and renew will fix this at others its like it won't give the full info to a computer no matter what I do.

ps I have the exact same settings on the old linksys router and no problems at all.

=====================
last thing

just rebooted on the home computer and now under connections I have an internet gateway connection along with the local area connection WTF is this trying to share a connection with....and it still can't get past the modem.
this board is an asus p5b deluxe with the wireless build in but it is disabled in the bios.

It probably has to do with the order you are turning things on.. this happens to me sometimes. It is best to always keep the router and cable modem on especially after it is working. Why do you turn them off? Make sure to turn the cable modem on, then the router, then the computer and leave a little time inbetween.

As vorgusa stated, you should leave your modem and router on. You need to turn the modem on first, then the router. By chance does your modem have a built in DHCP server? What ISP do you have and what connection type is it?

well last night with the modem turned on first, then the router....after everything settled down I turned on my computers 1 at a time....ONLY the xp pro could see the internet. For some reason the 2 xp homes are locked out...get to the router but that is as far as they can go...while resetting the router and stuff...even the pro could not get past the router.

I reset the modem with the hard button on the back...set its ip and told it to reboot this is with all computers and modem plugged in....
everyone can connect and all is well...

Have no idea what will happen this weekend when I get back and have to cold boot everything.

ps one home has an asus p5b with the wireless stuff on the board....its disabled in the bios but I still get 2 connections...one your std local area connection and then I get another one saying internet sharing.
is there a way to disable this in winders anywhere?
