d-link 614+ router: why do some have 2 antennaes?

I noticed that this exact model has two types one with two antennaes and another with only 1. Does the one with a single antennae have weaker range?

the version with 1 antenna is the newer of the two. bascially the only difference is the chip inside the newer obvuosly uses a upgraded chip. I don't know which one works better, I have the newer one with one antenna and it works well just make sure u turn off 4x mode if u don't use a d link wifi card. if you are buying this router new u will ALWAYS get the 1 anttena verision as they do NOT make the other one anymore.

I have a 614+ with the 2 antennae and I've got 3 PCs connected to the WAN ports, and another 3 connected wireless without problem, with an Excellent signal distance of about 400 feet inside the house (and outside). The good thing about this router is that I didn't pay for it..was a nice gift from D-Link 🙂

thank you both for posting ... for both of you 🙂

According to D-link's site, the older two-antenna version uses an ARM7 processor while the newer one-antenna model uses an ARM9. Other than that, the newer version has a nifty utility inside its web-based configuration utility that can tell if a cable is attached properly to a port or not. The newer version also claims to support stateful packet inspection although I think the capability was added to the older version via firmware updates (don't quote me on it).

btw, w/ the 2 antenna model, only 1 of them acually does anything, don't think b/c there are 2 antennaes that you're getting a better deal
