Hey all,
I'm looking for a game to play with my son on PC. I played a lot of D&D as a child, and now I'm looking for a similar rpg type game. We tried Neverwinter Nights 2, but there was too much dialog and waiting at loading screens. I've also played Baldur's Gate 2, and that was great also, but I'm looking for a game with less story and more action. Lately we've been playing a lot of Left 4 Dead 1/2, and we both want something a little more "classical". Anyone got any ideas?

first person or third person is fine either way. we both have fairly powerful laptops, (mine has a 8600m and his... a 9800m gs i think.)

Thank you
T

If you liked Baldurs Gate 2 but preferred action over story line, get Icewind Dale 1 and 2.

Ive heard great things about Icewind Dale. It has more action, but less storyline than BG2?

Also, I haven't played Diablo 1 or 2, and I've gotten mixed reviews

Yes, NWN is a lot like Baldur's Gate with a lot more action and less - but still a decent amount - of story IMO. Diablo 2 is better than Diablo IMO and even more action.

In fact, when Diablo came out there was a big debate in the community about whether it could be called an RPG at all, I suspect that was when 'action rpg' was created.

One of the best things about NWN is the tools they have for creating your own levels. There are also plenty of levels you can find that others have made.

Um... gonna throw this one out there for a curveball... but Dungeons & Dragons Online? It's F2P, and MMO. It's pretty authentic from a D&D standpoint too.

This is a pretty good suggestion actually. DDO isn't an amazing game but if you're playing with people you know it can be a lot of fun. Not to mention it's free, which is always great.

I suggest getting neverwinter nights 1 and playing in online persistant worlds. I havn't been in that game in years but I've had an itch to go back to it. The most fun I've ever had in any rpg was on the user-created persistant worlds. Might take a while to find one you like but once you did the time spent was well worth it.

If you do this, make sure you get the diamond addition or whatever it is that gives you all of the expansions or most of the online stuff wont be available. Also, you might want to check around and make sure that the online community is still thriving. Like I said, I havn't been on there in a while.

I could never get a persistent world to work, although I did enjoy nwn1... by myself. NWN2 had way too much story, and thats the one my son and I tried, and failed.

Seriously thinking about getting icewind dale 2. Do I need to get 2 copies?

There are tons of downloadable modules for NWN2. I played one or two online with a High School DnD friend before playing multiplayer PW worlds online (and the original campaign with 2 friends).

Oh and a lot of fan modules (some even built from pnp modules) for NWN1.

You might even be able to play togethor from a LAN.

My son and I had fun playing Guild Wars together..but that's a bunch of reading as well, but we'd group up in some instances. He's only 9 and enjoyed it. 5 or so skills, and button clicking with good graphics..very easy.
